MILWAUKEE'S BOUTIQUE HOTEL
A Milwaukee icon, The Pfister Hotel has been a prominent feature in the downtown Milwaukee landscape since opening. The dream of a German immigrant, Guido Pfister, The Pfister hotel was an aspiration to build a “palace for the people.” Sadly, Guido passed away in 1889, at a time when the downtown Milwaukee hotel was still only a dream. His son, Charles Pfister, soon took over the reins of the boutique hotel in Milwaukee and construction began in 1890.
At the time of its completion in 1893, The Pfister Hotel had already gained iconic status as being one of the first all-electric and completely fireproof, boutique hotels in Milwaukee. The Pfister was also the first boutique hotel in the world to utilize individual thermostat controls in each room. With 200 guest rooms, 61 private bathrooms and 14 baths, Milwaukee’s “Grande Dame” opened to critical acclaim worldwide.
Purchased by Ben Marcus in 1962, the Marcus family has continued the tradition of grand excellence in their ownership of The Pfister Hotel, working not only to preserve her history but to expand upon it for generations to come. One of The Pfister Hotel's most enduring legacies and strongest bonds has been with the art community. Home to the largest hotel collection of Victorian Artwork in the world, The Pfister’s walls house over 80 vibrant and expressive works of Victorian art spread throughout the downtown Milwaukee boutique hotel.
As one of the leading boutique hotels in Wisconsin, The Pfister's devotion to the arts is exemplified in its award-winning Artist-in-Residence program. Now in its 12th year, the Artist-in-Residence program has been nationally recognized as a pioneering example of community innovation. The residency is an opportunity for an artist to be at the forefront of Milwaukee in an artist studio/gallery on the 1st floor of the downtown Milwaukee hotel. The artist space is open to hotel guests and the public encouraging visitors to interact with the artist while watching the evolution of each piece of work firsthand.
