GENERAL SUMMARY:

Physician Assistants (PA) and Nurse Practitioners (NP) are graduates of an accredited educational program and are nationally certified and state licensed professionals. The scope of practice is determined by state law and licensure, facility policy, education, professional judgement, personal experience, and practice agreement. Physician assistants are independent prescribers of Schedule II-V controlled substances, using their own DEA number and signature.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Utilization of a high degree of discriminative judgement while providing medical management including assessment of medical and psychosocial status, comprehensive history and physical examination and condition assessment. Order and interpretation of appropriate laboratory tests, diagnostic studies and therapeutic modalities with the development of diagnostic impressions and a comprehensive plan of care. Plan of care will be based on current guidelines and with the participating physician when necessary.
  • Request consultation from health professionals as indicated by patient condition.
  • Write orders for medications within prescriptive authority pursuant to state and federal regulations and the practice agreement.
  • Perform procedure as indicated by patient need, PA education, and experience and practice agreement.
  • Document all medical findings in the form of H&P/Transition of Care, progress notes, procedure notes, discharge instructions, and discharge summary.
  • Instruct, educate and counsel patients and families, as appropriate, on health status, test results, disease process, and plan of care, preventive care and health promotion.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Education/Training:

  • Graduate of AMA recognized PA program that is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for Physician Assistants and meet requirements of the state or Masters in Nursing.

B. Work Experience:

  • Previous APP experience preferred.
  • Previous emergency experience is preferred.

C. Certification/Licensure:

  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
  • Licensure as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner by the state of Michigan
  • BLS
  • ACLS and DEA as required by position

D. Other Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates critical thinking, possesses excellent oral and written communication skills, team oriented and collaborative outlook with a focus on patient and family centered care.
