About This Role:

Job Title: Manager, Physical Security and Access Control

Position Summary: The Physical Security and Access Control Manager is a critical member of the Risk and Safety team at Kansas State University, while working closely with partners throughout the university. As the university moves toward unified systems for access control, security cameras, and key management, this position provides support and oversight for those endeavors. Reporting to the Chief Risk and Safety Officer, this role is responsible for maintaining door access programs and key control programs to ensure appropriate interior and exterior access for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Additionally, the manager oversees camera request needs, user rights and privileges and related file storage. This position will work closely with the Police Department to meet their needs, advise on camera and security system infrastructure needs, and maintenance. The role includes work order management, data reporting, and project coordination. The manager also provides installation and service support for security systems and technology, including access control systems and video management systems. In addition to access control and camera technologies, the manager will also provide oversight for the university key shop.

Key Responsibilities:

Building Access Management

o Facilitate and track hard key operations, including managing key inventories and individual inventories with full-time staff.

o Facilitate day-to-day operations of the university's central door access programs for both interior and exterior doors.

o Coordinate and advise on door hardware updates and rekeying needs.

o Ensure corrective measures for door access concerns are initiated, coordinated, and appropriately communicated to stakeholders and customers.

o Initiate and track ADA accommodation work and resources related to door access.

o Assist with system programming needs and serve in an after-hours resource for physical security needs

o Set triggers and changes in the door access system to assist with various occupancy needs.

Security System Management

o Monitor and evaluate security systems, including door access and cameras, and develop reporting to identify problems with door access and camera functions.

o Compile and analyze data from various reports for door access and camera systems to provide information and guidance for departmental decisions.

o Ensure that security technology projects and hardware deployments conform to documented design standards and security technology policies and procedures.

o Work with system vendors' technical support to troubleshoot and resolve problems or address system improvements.

o Provide on-call technical support as needed during emergency operations.

o Review project proposals and quotes to ensure technical and departmental requirements are met, ensuring projects meet clients' and users' needs and expectations of quality and functionality.

Support and Training

o Help develop policies and procedures related to security functions and equipment.

o Collaborate with campus partners, vendors, and other University community members to provide progressive, coordinated physical and electronic security services.

o Maintain operational performance management of electronic security systems to ensure quality assurance and customer satisfaction.

o Ensure clients and end-users are provided professional, courteous, and timely support and service.

o Develop a strong working knowledge of clients' and users' areas of responsibility.

o Provide end-user security systems and application training to campus partners.

o Maintain productive working relationships within the division of Risk and Safety and other essential campus partners including IT and Facilities.

Supervision and Leadership

o Supervise campus key control and lock shop

o Provide subject matter expertise to campus on matters related to access control and campus security

o Maintain productive working relationships within the division of Risk and Safety and other essential campus partners including IT, Facilities, and Research Security.

* Perform other related work as needed.

This position is required to be performed on-site. Work is performed on employer premises or designated assignment location.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Requires a bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience. This position may use an educational equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Supervisory experience
  • 6 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in security systems coordination, including key and card access management
  • Knowledge of security systems infrastructure and maintenance
  • Experience in developing policies and procedures related to security functions
  • Strong problem-solving and data analysis skills
  • Excellent communication and coordination abilities to work with various campus partners and external contractors/vendors
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations requiring discretion and confidentiality


Other Requirements:



  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) certification preferred
