Job Summary

Applies professional knowledge or expertise in one or more specialty areas within EH&S and serves as lead person on one or more program(s) within a single discipline. Work is reviewed upon completion to ensure predetermined objectives are adequately met and that application of professional / technical judgment is sound. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Decision-making is based on established procedures; relevant laws; regulations and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology; impact on other EH&S programs, and senior management approvals as required. Decisions may impact individual work, other EH&S programs, other departments and / or segments of the organization.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $78,000-$167,300 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Safety Office is under the direction of the Chief Operations Officer. The Safety Office is responsible for all medical center environmental safety programs and makes high-level decisions to ensure that the system is in full compliance with all regulating and accrediting agencies. Has the authority and responsibility to intervene in any hospital operations whenever conditions pose an immediate threat to life and health or threaten damage to Medical Center buildings and/or equipment and develop immediate plans for correction.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Health, or a related area and/or four years of experience & training.
  • Three years of relevant experience.
  • Thorough knowledge/understanding of safety, SPH, workplace violence prevention, and ergonomics programs including related laws and regulations; and general knowledge/understanding of these areas.
  • Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, and skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • The ability to work onsite full-time in San Francisco.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize, and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints.
  • Strong skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
  • Strong project management skills to monitor the status of multiple ongoing projects and ensure can report on the status of the project at any time.
  • Analyze data to determine opportunities and monitor progress.
  • Three years or more of experience working in a hospital environment.
  • Certified Crisis Prevention Instructor.
