Job Summary Department: Integrative Health
Under supervision of the Admin Supervisor, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Staff, the Hospital Assistant II assists in the delivery of care to patients in the Osher Center for Integrative Health ambulatory group practices. Work includes a variety of personal care and clinical procedures including assuring positive care outcomes. S/he will perform assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of the specialty care services provided to patients within the practices. S/he is required to learn and be able to assist in the Osher Center for Integrative Health. S/he is required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center.
Key Responsibilities:
Duties & Essential Job Functions: Clinical:
- Perform routine clinical functions and document in patient charts, including vital signs, pain screening, and chief complaints.
- Document use of interpreter services as appropriate and facilitate interpreter participation for medical appointments.
- Assist nurses, providers, and patients in preparation for examinations and procedures.
- Successfully complete competencies for department-specific procedures, such as setting up exam rooms for specific examinations.
- Act as a chaperone for patients during examinations with medical providers.
- Serve as an internal float for the department as requested by supervisors.
- Transport patients as directed and ensure their safety.
- Obtain specimens and perform simple Point of Care Testing (POCT) and laboratory procedures.
- Participate in updating mandatory logs and facilitate referrals to other providers.
- Perform clinical activities accurately and in a timely manner.
- Assist physician staff in writing and sending out patient communications.
- Ensure compliance with infection control, safety, and administrative procedures.
Communication:
- Maintain professional and courteous telephone communications, adhering to medical center standards.
- Notify providers of patient delays and service issues and communicate delays to front office staff and patients.
- Share pertinent information with health team members and identify problems for resolution.
- Offer suggestions for change or improvement in clinic operations and assist patients with issues and complaints.
- Utilize Electronic Health Record (APEX) for documentation within the scope of practice.
- Perform various tasks in the EHR system, including documentation of vital signs, medication orders, and patient history.
Operations Maintenance:
- Maintain clean and well-stocked exam rooms, hub rooms, and labs, including ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment maintenance.
- Review lab results and print them for providers as requested.
- Obtain insurance authorizations for medications, procedures, and imaging.
- Schedule complex procedures and coordinate services for patients.
- Coordinate meal and rest periods with other Hospital Assistants and ensure clinic coverage.
- Adhere to infection control procedures and Ambulatory Services policies for equipment sterilization.
- Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives.
Other Functions and Responsibilities:
- Perform any other duties related to patient care activities as required.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
- Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program.
- One year of experience as a Medical Assistant/Hospital Assistant in a medical practice.
- Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience as a Medical Assistant/ Hospital Assistant in a medical practice.
- Three or more years of experience in specialty care such as oncology, women's health, psychiatry, and pediatrics.
License/Certification
- Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
