About the Job

The purpose of the Researcher 1 position is to perform immunoregulation studies for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes, as well as assist with the manufacturing of cell therapy products used in human and non-human prime (allo-) and porcine (xeno-) islet transplantation.. Additionally, the position will assist with quality control of all manufactured products at the cores within the Department of Surgery's Schulze Diabetes Institute. General laboratory functions are also expected of this position.

The position will sometimes include non-standard work hours (weekends, nights) and periods of time on-call for research organs. Due to a lengthy training period, this position is a minimum 2 year commitment.

Isolation and quality control assessment of different cell types from primary tissues and other research support-80%
* Isolation, purification, culture of different cell types using sterile technique following standard operating procedures with supervision.
* Prepare media, enzymes, and solutions under sterile conditions and in large quantities ahead of time.
* Perform quality control of different cell types by following standard operating procedures of varying assays and manufacturing processes with supervision
* Short and long term sterile cell cultures by initiating culture starts and changing media using aseptic technique
* Perform complement dependent cytotoxicity assays, flow crossmatch, CFSE-MLR, and other immunological assays
* Perform flow cytometric and CyTOF analysis to execute CFSE-MLR, phenotyping of the immune subsets, functional assays for T and B cells at the bench, and contribute to research and development of assays with supervision
* Processings of blood and tissue samples from non-human primates, humans, and occasionally other animals
* Assist researchers with cell therapy product release
* Assist and support with additional scientific, technical, or administrative activities involving other laboratory research projects

General Team and Lab Duties-First time doing activities will be done in parallel to Tissue Culture Techniques-15%
* Assists with the restocking of staging areas; ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies
* Washing, wrapping, and autoclaving/sterilizing instruments, materials and equipment following standing operating procedures and reporting deviations from them as soon as possible
* Keep detailed records of all experiments, procedures, and inventory in laboratory notebooks, databases, spreadsheets, forms, batch records, and web-applications. May perform data analysis using designed protocols
* Participating in staff meetings and providing input to improve daily laboratory operations
Process Research & Development -5%
* Periodic literature review on relevant topics including current methods, reagents, and ethics
* Maintain a working knowledge of the principles behind daily work and weekly upkeep
* Assist with research and development of optimization projects

BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience equal to at least 4 years.
