Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine ( DPLM) at the Brody School of Medicine is home to approximately 22 faculty members and 11 residents. The department serves a 900 + bed hospital ( ECU Health Medical Center) and has a robust surgical pathology volume of approximately 22,000 - 24,000 specimens a year. A third party (McKesson) provides professional billing. Additionally, the deepening partnership with ECU Health offers the opportunity to leverage a wide network of hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, and clinics.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a clinical academic department of the Brody School of Medicine. The department contracts with ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, ECU Health-Beaufort Hospital and the Outer Banks Hospital to provide clinical services in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology for both hospitalized and clinic patients.

The mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of the citizens of eastern North Carolina and beyond by delivering the highest quality pathology services, exemplary education for medical students, resident physicians, fellows, and other health care professionals, and to create new knowledge through research. Core principles serve as a guiding framework for the department's pathology services and education efforts.
Job Duties
ECU Health Academic and The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University are seeking a Department Chair. The successful candidate will join a growing academic division with either a full-time tenured or tenure-track appointment at the rank/title of Professor or Associate Professor. The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is seeking a Department Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine to ensure the continued excellence of the clinical, educational and academic programs within the department. Reporting to the Executive Dean of Brody School of Medicine, the Chair is responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of academic and research programs of the department. For the clinical departments, the Chair is responsible for all patient care activities and quality of care for the department. The Chair has financial authority over the state appropriated budget assigned to the department, extramural research funding received, practice plan revenues and expenses, philanthropic funding, and other financial matters for the department in accordance with applicable ECU, Brody School of Medicine, and ECU Health Academic Physicians policies and practices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic programs and curriculum: Oversees the department's coordination of the formal academic program and curricular design for medical students; Works with faculty in the development of the curriculum, assuring compliance with curricular policy and accreditation standards for the medical education program; Serves as a source of information regarding national trends in medical education relevant to the department's discipline(s) and initiates projects designed to improve the educational program and disseminates information to faculty, medical school administration, and other stakeholders; Supports the department's graduate medical education programs, including the recruitment and selection of resident physicians, maintaining a curriculum consistent with evolving trends in patient care, and recommends faculty to serve as program director(s), in compliance with ACGME and other relevant standards; Evaluates each faculty member annually on their competence in teaching and contribution toward the educational programs of the department; and Represents the School to external constituencies regarding academic programs as appropriate.

Faculty and staff support: Leads efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified faculty and staff into the department who support the department's and School's efforts to meet their missions; Assigns responsibilities and resources within the department to support the growth and welfare of faculty and staff individually and collectively; Mentors faculty and staff directly or through a structured system that provides appropriate support; Assures the tenure track faculty members receive guidance and support in a productive manner that optimizes their individual potential for success; Assures every employee of the department is evaluated annually in a fair, objective, accurate and constructive manner according to applicable ECU and Brody School of Medicine policies and practices; and Develops appropriate ways to recognize accomplishments of faculty and staff.

Clinical activities: Provides overall leadership for all clinical programs, including quality of care, participation in credentialing of practitioners, promotion of new programs, and meeting budget targets for the practice plan; Administers the ECU Health Academic Physicians Clinical Faculty Compensation objectively and consistently, in accordance with all relevant policies, rules and regulations, so that high performers are appropriately recognized and individuals not meeting their targets are identified; Serves as Chief of Service at ECU Health Medical Center or supports the work of another department member who serves as Chief of Service, as appropriate; Coordinates the department's involvement in and growth of patient care programs with ECU Health and ECU Health Medical Center; and Represents the School to external constituencies regarding clinical programs as appropriate.

Research programs: Provides overall leadership for all research programs, including promotion of new programs and meeting School and University targets for research effort; Supervises the scientific investigative work by faculty and staff of the department, to assure high quality conduct, adherence to internal and external regulatory requirements, and production of high quality publications that advance scientific knowledge; Assigns research space within the department based on objective assessment of need; and Monitors the flow of intramural and extramural funds expended for research in the department, including indirect cost recovery funds and the use of the Basic Science Faculty Compensation Plan, as appropriate.

Brody School of Medicine and departmental administration: Leads budget planning for the department for all sources of funding applicable to the department, and assures that staffing and funding are appropriate for mission requirement; Leads departmental planning initiatives and participates in continuing efforts to link/integrate the department initiatives with both the School's and the University's "Strategic Plans"; Ensures department compliance with Brody School of Medicine and ECU's administrative policies and procedures and oversees the management of department operations; Leads departmental philanthropic funding efforts; Attends and represents the School at internal and external meetings at the request of the Dean; and Fulfills or responds to requested assignments by the Dean essential for the School, whenever possible.

Minimum Education/Experience
MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.

Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of North Carolina. Board Certified or eligible for board certification.
10 years in academic health care leadership.

Experience in supervising the work of others in academic medical settings and working directly with senior medical school administration, hospital administration, and other organizational executives.

Demonstrated ongoing commitment to personal growth and expansion of professional skills.

Experience in building effective teams to identify and resolve problems.

Demonstrated experience in developing and expanding clinical and translational research programs and extramural funding.

Demonstrated national recognition in an area of pathology practice, education, administration or research.

Demonstrated success over a sustained time in teaching, research, and professional service.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Eligibility for medical licensure in North Carolina.
