Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Electrician will perform skilled work related to the installation, maintenance, repair, service, and alteration of electrical systems and equipment according to blueprints and drawings, to accomplish projects. Performs work in accordance with Institute and regulatory agencies' safety standards and practices.

This is an Essential Reporting position. An employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery; and is expected to report to campus as soon as possible.

Essential Job Duties



  • Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
  • Installs and troubleshoots electrical systems including, but not limited to, raceway systems such as EMT, rigid conduit, flexible metal conduit, surface mounted raceways, cable trays, and interior and exterior lighting fixtures.
  • Installs circuit breaker panel boards, switches, motor controls, transformers, and power outlets of various voltage and amperage ratings ranging from 120 single phase through 480 three phase.
  • Installs communication cable systems and assists with the installation of fiber optic cables.
  • Repairs lighting, performs re-lamping, and replaces ballasts, typically from ladders ranging in height from 4 to 12 feet and occasionally from lifts that extend up to 30 feet.
  • Works proficiently with basic tools of the electrical industry including, but not limited to, conduit benders and test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, and megohmmeters.
  • Troubleshoots conventional building wiring, motors, and control circuits and recommends changes to projects due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Assists in various other duties such as job walks, estimating costs on small projects, operating Campus vehicles, and consulting with Campus community to help solve problems.
  • Involved with testing and operation of building systems including but limited to battery banks, emergency lighting, and standby generators.
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications



  • Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency supplemented by courses in electrical theory and electrical construction code from a trade school.
  • Must be a California certified, journeyman level electrician with a minimum of 7 years of experience.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or associate degree (or certificate of completion) from a 2-year electrical construction and maintenance course.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local electrical codes, orders, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Must provide and maintain basic hand tools.
  • Must be able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work on ladders, scaffolds, indoors, outdoors, attics, basements, and other crawl spaces.
  • Must be able to identify color-coded conductor wires.
  • Must be able to detect unusual sounds from transformers, fixture ballasts, and alarm systems.
  • Must be able to smell to detect burning transformers, breakers, conductors, switches, ballasts, and relays.
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and email software.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain by the date of hire a valid California driver's license and maintain it throughout the course of employment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds daily.


Preferred Qualifications



  • 5 years of work experience in a university or facilities setting is a plus.
  • Preferred candidate will demonstrate good understanding of electrical circuits and theory.
  • Able to read and draw electrical diagrams.

Hiring Range

$36.50 - $41.50 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
