JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for an experienced Research and Development Engineer to join our Electronic Materials and Devices Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL/Penn State's purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities engineering and technology needs. You will join a team of scientists and engineers performing a wide range of fundamental and applied research and development projects involving semiconductor, optical and piezoelectric materials synthesis, materials characterization, electronic device and sensor fabrication and testing.

You will:

  • Manage Electronic Materials Research projects of small to moderate size and scope, making substantial contributions for determining goals and objectives; responsible for assuring quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness of projects.
  • Specify and/or develop material synthesis processes for bulk crystal growth, thin film deposition and ceramics processing.
  • Utilize a wide range of characterization methods to assess material semiconductor, optical, surface and structural properties.
  • Assist in the development of device/sensor designs and specify and implement nanofabrication processes
  • Conduct electrical testing of devices using a wide range of electronic test equipment at cryogenic, room and elevated temperatures.
  • Work closely with other engineers, scientists and faculty at Penn State and at DoD customer laboratories to accomplish organizational goals
  • Contribute to proposals, prepare reports and presentations in the department related to Electronic Materials Research.
  • Mentor entry level R&D engineers, engineering support specialists and undergraduate research assistants in the development of technical, project, and business development skills

This position will be filled at the advanced professional level. Typical requirements include a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, Master's preferred; 5+years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required skill and experience includes:

  • Knowledge of semiconductor materials, characterization and device fabrication
  • Knowledge of structural, chemical and electrical characterization
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a project team

Preferred skills includes:

  • Previous hands-on experience with wide bandgap/ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor materials, defect structures and device fabrication.
  • Previous hands-on experience with electrical device/sensor characterization
  • Experience with all aspects of nanofabrication (lithography, etching, deposition)
  • Extensive material characterization experience (SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman, FTIR, Interferometry, AFM)
  • Chemi-Mechanical Polishing (CMP) experience
  • Prior leadership of scientists, engineers, technicians and students in a research setting
  • Knowledge of chemical vapor deposition, liquid phase crystal growth methods, material evaporation/sputtering methods.
  • Knowledge and extensive experience with cleanroom procedures.
  • Knowledge of ceramic materials processing and characterization

Your working location will be full on-site, located in State College, PA. Some off-site travel will be required.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$109,300.00 - $164,000.00
