JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a Research and Development Engineer to join our Facilities and Instrumentation Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The Department is part of the Research Facilities Division within the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office, which has a long, successful history of providing innovative solutions and technology for a range of U.S. Government and Industry sponsors. This position will focus on the software development and data acquisition needs relating to the operation and testing at ARL experimental facilities and field tests for the office.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • National Instruments Labview coding, Graphics User Interface design, test setup, control and processing

  • Instrumentation control in Labview and MATLAB, utilizing RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, Ethernet and other communication standards

  • Interfacing National Instruments Labview with Programmable Logic Controllers to share data and build control GUI's

  • Sensor interface development for acquiring data using sensors such as pressure, force load, acceleration, strain gages, RPM Encoders, etc

  • Trouble shoot sensor failures or electronic noise issues

  • MATLAB Data manipulation and presentation to create graphs and data tables

  • MATLAB image and video processing

  • Synchronizing of MATLAB video image data and National Instruments Labview data acquisition systems

  • Synchronizing multi camera video streams with lighting and data systems

  • Collaborate with other engineers, researchers and academic faculty

  • Occasional travel to support field testing and demonstrations

  • Working with test engineers and principal investigators to obtain required data to complete investigations and assessments

Additional responsibilities for higher level position include:

  • National Instruments Labview FPGA coding for embedded systems

  • MATLAB Digital signal processing (Fourier transforms, spectral analysis, filtering, etc.)

  • Provide leadership of a project team through the development of complex software systems including analysis of needs/requirements, software systems architecture and concept development, detailed design processes, and software development, systems integration and test planning and execution

  • Maintain awareness of software engineering tools and techniques, and assist in mentoring other engineers in the development of proper procedures and techniques

  • Initiate or contribute data/analysis/design for use in technical reports, documents, proposals, or oral/written presentations

  • Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals; provide ideas to improve organizational efficiency at group and department levels

  • Manage projects of small or moderate size and scope; make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals and objectives; responsible for assuring quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness of assigned projects

This position can be filled at multiple levels, depending upon your education and experience. Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's Degree or higher in an engineering or science related discipline plus two year's related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level positions.

Required skills and experience include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering or science related discipline

  • Strong software background: National Instruments Labview, MATLAB, and other programming languages

  • Software design experience: Object-oriented and functional design

  • Software development tools: testing, configuration management and issue tracking

  • Experience using National Instruments Labview and MATLAB to communicate with instrumentation and sensor systems

  • Experience in creating user interfaces and GUI's using National Instruments Labview and MATLAB

  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills - ability to work well within a team environment

Preferred skills and experience include:

  • Experience with cameras and video imaging systems

  • Experience with various types of sensor and how they are used

Your working location will be fully on-site located in State College, PA. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$86,300.00 - $164,000.00
