Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Technologist

Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Cardiovascular/ Elecrtophysiology Laboratory Manager and according to established protocols assists clinically and technically in invasive and non-invasive cardiac catheterization/ electrophysiology procedures utilizing specialized equipment while maintaining patient safety and comfort. Sets up operates and maintains specialized physiological systems and instrumentation used for patient monitoring during cardiac catheterization/ electrophysiology procedures. May assist physicians in the preparation and performance of procedures. Acquires enters and records data and performs various tests and calculations. Shares essential information through documentation and verbal communication. Participates in continuous process improvement activities in the unit.

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cardiac Catheterization:
Sets up activates and checks all monitoring and recording equipment necessary for diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization procedures. Balances and/or calibrates equipment such as hemodynamic recorder blood gas apparatus transducers and cardiac output computers. Operates various biomedical equipment utilized to monitor patient status and acquire data during cardiac catheterization procedure including: digital angiography computer ECG machine cardiac output computer angio anlyzer blood gas apparatus contrast injectors intracoronary ultrasound console and AngioJet. Sets up fluoroscopy and cineangiography radiologic equipment as prescribed by physician. Operates and maintains x-ray dark room including developing editing splicing and storage of cine films. Constantly assesses equipment for proper functioning reliability and cleanliness. Notifies Manager of malfunctions.

Records and maintains raw data and makes calculations for determination of derived data. Monitors patient*s hemodynamic status during preocedures and alerts physician of changes in pressure heart rate cardiac rhythm oxygen saturation or blood gas results. May transport patient to cath/EP lab or other hospital areas.

Sets up lab including equipment instruments and catheterization supplies prior to procedure. May position prep and drape patient. Assists in maintaining and providing supplies and equipment for laboratory. According to established procedures cleans and prepares med-surg supplies equipment and instruments for sterilization; replenishes supplies and cleans lab procedure rooms. Maintains established hospital and department policies procedures and objective for quality improvements safety and environmental and standard precaution infection control.

Participates in new and/or ongoing research projects.

Performs other related duties as required.

Electrophysiology:
Performs the technical operations required for the performance of routine diagnostic through advanced interventional electrophysiology procedures to include electrophysiologic monitoring and diagnostic testing in a safe and efficient manner. This includes all aspects of connection interfacing monitoring operational integrity repairing and troubleshooting complex technical EP equipment and instruments including but not limited to the physiologic recording system 3-D mapping systems intra-cardiac ultrasound equipment biplane x-ray system ablation generators external defibrillators cardiac stimulators and device programmers.

Participates in procedural activities within scope of position including room prep and breakdown fluid preparation stocking rooms QC checks room cleanup sterile tray and sterile field setup cleaning and packaging items to be sent for sterilization and supply inventory.

Assists in paper based and electronic procedural documentation data entry and report generation.

Assists as surgical scrub tech during device implants following hospital policy using aseptic technique as needed.

Transports patients and equipment to and from procedure area as needed.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Associate of science degree in AMA accredited Allied Health related field or a certificate of completion from an accredited program in radiology cardiovascular technology nursing engineering or related health science required.
Licensed Radiologic Technologist or RCIS (Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist) or RCES (Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist certification) required
Certification in BLS and ACLS required within 3 months of hire or transfer into the position.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
1 year experience in Cardiac Cath Lab Electrophysiology Lab or Interventional Radiology Lab required.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience setting up operating and maintaining technical Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiologic equipment.
Analytical skills to assess operation and reliability of Cath/EP equipment interpret intracardiac data and make accurate measurements of intracardiac recordings.
Mathematical skills to perform calculation of data.
Understanding of cardiovascular physiology and disease and the ability to recognize changes in patient condition.
Visual acuity to monitor equipment gauges and displays read labels and charts and the like.
Demonstrated ability in advanced ECG interpretation arrhythmia recognition and sterile techniques.
Physical ability to assist with transport and transfer of patient and equipment as well as to stand for prolonged periods of time during procedures which require wearing a lead apron.
Interpersonal skills to explain procedures elicit cooperation of patient during procedures and exchange information with physicians and other hospital personnel.
Ability or perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillate patients.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in laboratory and surgical procedure area with some exposure to hazards such as low level radiation from x-ray equipment blood samples and electrical shock from high voltage cables but hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions.
Requires considerable walking standing lifting and carrying items.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within the department*s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies are required.

None.
