Position Summary Information


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least (1) year of full-time experience or (2) years as a Graduate Assistant with similar responsibilities.
  • Experience leading and overseeing staff
  • Possess a background in facility operations and management, facility scheduling, and event management.
  • Possess strong organizational skills. Attention to detail, communication, and collaboration skills.

License/Certification Required
Maintain CPR/ AED, First-Aid, and Instructor Certifications in order to serve as an instructor for UREC.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related area
  • Practical experience as a facility supervisor and/or understanding of collegiate recreational facilities services.
  • Experience providing student leadership development opportunities in a college recreation setting.
  • Active involvement in higher education national organizations (NIRSA, NASPA, etc)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Operations

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the UREC Facilities (Student Recreation Center, Quinn Recreation Center, and mt Mitchell)
  • Coordinate the facility equipment needs including the setup, breakdown, and renting of equipment, etc.
  • Review the UREC Facility Schedule on a daily basis. Ensure all classrooms and meeting spaces are set up appropriately and all other activity areas are set up appropriately for open recreation times.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director of Facilities and Operations to update the UREC website on a regular basis to notify patrons of upcoming events, facility closures, holiday closures, etc.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director of Facilities and Operations to develop and implement operational protocols for facility management services for events and rentals.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures and Training Materials for Fusion Point-of-Sale Transactions, Activity Registrations, and Equipment Rentals.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Facilities and Operations with the identification and analysis of facility problems and recommend improvements including deferred maintenance, capital improvements, and long-range preventive maintenance.


Student Experience

  • Mentor students to develop and utilize skills to work with diverse student populations.
  • Hold self, students, and staff members accountable to departmental expectations of creating a welcoming environment at UREC facilities.
  • Advocate for the needs of all students.
  • Maintain sensitivity to different perspectives and identities.
  • Provide direction and resources to enhance students' experiences.
  • Ensure quality in the participant experience related to entering facilities, using equipment, and engaging with student staff

Student Development

  • Directly responsible for the hiring, scheduling, training, mentorship, performance evaluations, and day-to-day supervision of approximately (40) Facility Supervisors, approximately (20) Operations Assistants, approximately (40) Front Desk Attendants, (4-6) Facilities and Operations Program Managers, and 2 Facilities and Operations Graduate Assistants.
  • Provide daily, hands-on instruction and development opportunities for student staff through ongoing training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
  • Design, coordinate, and lead training opportunities that focus on the growth and development of student self-awareness, leadership, and employability skill sets.
  • Schedule and lead monthly training and development meetings for all student staff teams in the Facilities and Operations area.
  • Schedule and lead weekly training and development meetings for all Program Managers and Graduate Assistants in the Facilities and Operations area.
  • Actively engage in professional development opportunities to enhance the ability to work with students and colleagues.
  • Teach CPR, AED, and First Aid classes for University Recreation Student Staff and App State community participants.
  • Develop and coordinate staff appreciation initiatives in order to retain student employees and build a sense of belonging within the team.

Fiscal Management

  • Responsible for managing labor expenditures for Facility Supervisors, Operations Assistants, Front Desk Attendants and Program Managers, approximately $399,000.
  • Approve weekly payroll for Facility Supervisors, Operations Assistants, Front Desk Attendants, Program Managers and Graduate Assistants in the Facilities and Operations area.
  • Assist with the projections, expenditures, and monitoring of the other Facilities and Operations budgets, approximately 1.7 million.

Risk Management

  • Provide oversight for risk management related to all UREC Facilities
  • Develop, coordinate and lead Risk Management and Safety training for Facilities and Operations student staff.
  • Assist in the development and review of the Risk Management Plan.
  • Conduct facility inspections, risk management audits, and monitor facility usage and equipment inventory to minimize loss.
  • Ensure continuity in departmental and university business practices across Facilities Areas including managing student employee certifications, and compliance with FERPA and HIPAA regulations
  • Serve as Administrator on Call on a rotational basis.
  • Monitor Campus Recreation Facilities industry trends and recommend modifications to risk management policies and procedures.

Departmental Leadership and Support

  • Establish effective and positive rapport with program staff, university personnel, students, and University Recreation users.
  • In conjunction with the University Recreation (UREC) Pro-Staff, participate, lead, and/or coordinate departmental initiatives including Fall Training, Fall and Spring Hiring Sessions, etc.
  • Provide departmental and divisional support by participating in various hiring committees and Student Affairs events and initiatives.
  • Participate in UREC Committees, Work Teams, and other areas within the department to advance departmental strategic goals and objectives.
  • Continue professional development by involvement in professional organizations and participating in regular continuing education.
