Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider Manager provides leadership to Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) across the UCSF Health Faculty Practice Organization (FPO) and Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco (BCH SF) children's inpatient practice areas and is responsible for their success. Administrative responsibilities fall into five major areas: 1. Administrative; 2. Staff Development; 3. Education; 4. Leadership 5. HR and clinical practice oversight of the APP team in the inpatient pediatric practice areas. In addition, the APP manager is an expert clinician in Advanced Practice. Maintains 24-hour line management responsibility for the administration of fiscal, material, and human resources for the APP team across the FPO and BCH children's inpatient practice areas. The APPs in these clinical areas are a highly motivated and engaged group of professionals who provide outstanding care to the many complex patient populations.

The Advanced Practice Provider Manager governs Advanced Practice across the FPO and BCH SF children's inpatient practice areas. An Advanced Practice Provider (APP) possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide expert advanced patient care in their area of specialization. The Advanced Practice Provider Manager will be guided by and follow the policies and standardized procedures or practice agreement, rules and regulations, requirement of supervision under CA statute, and bylaws of the UCSF Health, Nursing, Medical Staff, and any unique policies related to the provision of patient services. In California, nurse practitioners (APRNs), physician assistants (PAs), Certified Nurse Anesthetists, and Certified Nurse Midwives can practice, bill, and provide independent health care services under a standardized procedure or practice agreement in collaboration with a supervising physician. This position requires both a role as provider of clinical services as determined by the manager and the administrative functions of the position which involve future workforce planning, orientation of new APP providers, cost center management, and optimization strategies. The Advanced Practice Provider Manager oversees APP compliance with organizational and regulatory agency standards and state practice requirements.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $210,000 - $315,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Health Faculty Practice Organization (FPO) and Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco (BCH SF) children's inpatient practice areas span multiple clinical areas including but not limited to: Well Baby Nursery, Intensive Care Nursery, Pediatric Intensive Care, Pediatric Transitional Care, Pediatric Heart Center Practice Areas, Pediatric Oncology, Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant, and Pediatric Surgery. Manger will have responsibilities in one of the following areas of focus: Neonatal/Newborn Services, Pediatric Critical and Acute Care Services, or Heart Center Services. Inpatient services are delivered by multidisciplinary care teams including physicians, advanced practice providers, registered nurses, social workers, dietitians, Patient care assistants, and administrative support staff. The FPO and BCH SF children's inpatient practice areas provide highly complex care to a diverse population of patients; daily exposure to these unique patient populations and their associated levels of clinical complexity help to develop critical skillsets not ordinarily acquired at a typical hospital.

Required Qualifications


  • Master's Degree in clinical area of study (PA or NP)
  • Four to six (4-6) years of experience as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in Pediatrics.
  • Responsible for understanding and communicating an advanced knowledge of national, state, and local educational and legislative issues affecting advanced practice providers. Demonstrated knowledge of state and national regulatory requirements. Able to communicate this knowledge effectively to physician and APP stakeholders.
  • Ability to build knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance. Participates in decisions- on human resources matters.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability in advanced written and verbal communications skills. Able to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
  • Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by advanced practice providers in providing advanced-practice care, research, documentation, and employee supervision. Ability to analyze data, detect trends, and determine if action plans are required.
  • Ability to gather clinical information, develop differential diagnoses, and create problem lists independently. Competent to direct patient management and lead care team.
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal, and operational management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management, and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Doctorate
  • In-depth knowledge of a broad scope of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
  • One year experience managing a team of advance practice providers, complex workflows, and competing priorities; or equivalent experience as an advance practice leader in the profession.

License/Certification


  • Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the State of California.
  • Active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Furnishing license in California if a NP.
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support BLS certification.
  • Current AHA ACLS Certification.
  • NPI and be eligible for enrollment with all UCSF Health payers prior to privileging.
  • Current national certification in area of practice specialty or profession.

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
