Job Summary

Provide multifunctional user support and technical support for the 8.3.1 and 12.3.1 beamlines at the Advanced Light Source. Requires professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation.

The incumbent will be the primary user support contact for ALS beamline 8.3.1. This involves one-on-one training of users, starting up each shift, regular tuning and maintenance of the hardware and documenting the best-practices procedures. The position will also require design and construction of new equipment and apparatus, testing and optimizing the new hardware and developing the best protocols for using it. Examples include automatic sample de-icing, a puck/cassette unpacking robot, an in-situ tray screening goniometer, and interfacing this hardware with the BLU-ICE control system. The incumbent will also play an active role in advancing the research projects of UCSF scientists and our guest users, optimizing and directing the performance of the beamline to suit the needs of these projects.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

A key element of UCSF's research success is its deeply ingrained culture of collaboration. Although physics dictates that beamline 8.3.1 be located next to the particle accelerator at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, the X-ray diffraction facility has for 23 years been a focal point for collaborative science. It has served as a storehouse of knowledge and expertise for meeting the molecular imaging needs of not just UCSF researchers, but the entire UC system and even non-UC investigators who apply for time. It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain that tradition of excellence.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
• Minimum 5 years of experience with high vacuum systems, electrical and high voltage systems, computer controls, and sophisticated physical laboratory instrumentation, and user support experience at a state-of-the-art scientific research facility
• Knowledge of physics and chemistry and experimental techniques at the Master's Degree level (or based on equivalent professional-level knowledqe and experience)
• Experience implementing R&D projects, including demonstrated ability to have effective interaction and good working relationships with scientists and technical support staff
• Effective oral and written communication skills sufficient to document details of beamline operation for scientific users and to present and summarize results of R&D projects
• Exceptional creativity and originality, and advanced technical expertise and knowledge of engineering or scientific principles and practices of physics, chemistry, and engineering
• Advanced knowledge associated with the planning, development, and fabrication of engineering systems
• Advanced knowledge of specialized design work as well as the overall field
• Strong creativity and problem-solving abilities to apply principles, practices and procedures within discipline to complete difficult assignments
• Strong project management skills needed to assume responsibility for accomplishment of
• research objectives
• Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a
• clear and concise manner
• Advanced interpersonal and presentation skills
• Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner; readily assess complex challenges and barriers and recommend effective resolutions
