We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our team as a Public Safety Officer, Part-Time, Office of Public Safety. The successful candidate will be a positive-minded and collaborative in nature.

Position Summary: This is a part-time position that reports to the Shift Supervisor, Office of Public Safety, and will be responsible for ensuring adherence to public safety related policies and the discharging of all patrol and monitoring duties for the overall safety, protection, and safeguarding of Zoo employees, visitors, and property. The successful candidate will demonstrate an effective working style that embodies the Zoo's Core Values.

Compensation : $16.00 per hour

Schedule: Hours/Days are variable, but successful candidates must be able to work at least one weekend day per week.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Proactively engages with customers, on foot, vehicle, or bicycle patrol, to address issues to quickly diffuse situations and minimize disruption.
  • Prevents loss and damage by reporting irregularities.
  • Discusses infractions or violations with customers, assesses appropriate actions, and escorts customers from premises if necessary.
  • Circulates among visitors, customers, and staff to preserve order and protect property while ensuring a positive customer experience, greets customers, answers directional questions and escorts customers with disabilities.
  • Abide by all direction, guidance, and coaching by the shift supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications: Equivalent combinations of training, education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.
Education & Experience:


  • Prior customer service or security experience preferred.
  • Current First Aid, CPR & AED certifications preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstration of excellent oral and written communications, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an insurable driving record.


Working Conditions/Other Requirements: Employment is contingent upon passing a drug & nicotine screen and background investigation. Physically demanding working conditions are inherent in this job while performing the duties of the job. The incumbent is regularly required to stand, walk, drive a patrol vehicle, ride a bicycle, and/or utilize manual dexterity to use computer mouse and keyboard and other office equipment on occasion. The incumbent may be exposed to outside weather conditions for several hours per shift and must be able to lift/move/carry up to 75 pounds without assistance. Employment is considered part-time/variable hours. Variable hours are not to exceed an annual average of 30 hours per week. Hours are based on the season and zoo attendance but are flexible.
