The Duke Energy UX Design Summer Internship program is designed for currently enrolled college students looking to bring their creativity, problem-solving skills, innovative mindset, and passion for user-centered design to the energy industry.

As part of Duke Energy's Information Technology organization, UX Design Interns will participate in meaningful business and technology initiatives while gaining valuable hands-on experience. Interns will collaborate with UX designers, product teams, developers, and business stakeholders to help design intuitive, accessible, and impactful digital experiences for employees and customers.

Throughout the summer, interns will gain exposure to Duke Energy's business operations, build professional networks with fellow interns and experienced leaders, and develop practical skills that can be applied in future academic and professional pursuits.

What You Can Expect

Selected interns may have opportunities to:

  • Conduct user research and gather customer insights
  • Create personas, journey maps, and experience maps
  • Develop spec-driven prototypes by writing specifications and requirements gathering
  • Participate in usability testing and user feedback sessions
  • Support design thinking workshops and innovation initiatives
  • Contribute to product design and digital experience improvements
  • Learn about accessibility, inclusive design, and UX best practices
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to solve complex business and technology challenges
  • Network with peers, mentors, and senior leaders across the organization

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in User Experience (UX) Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Graphic Design, Product Design, Psychology, Economics, Information Science, Computer Science, or related field
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must not graduate prior to May 2027

Desired Qualifications:

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Exposure to or familiarity with:
    • User experience design
    • User research and usability testing
    • Design thinking and human-centered design
    • Wireframing and prototyping
    • Information architecture
    • Interaction design principles
    • Accessibility and inclusive design
  • Experience using tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Miro, or similar platforms
  • Leadership potential demonstrated through extracurricular activities, clubs, volunteer work, or project teams
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Self-driven, motivated, and proactive
  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn
  • Previous internship experience
