Platform / CI Build Engineer

Note: This role is remote but MUST be located on East Coast. If you are located in NYC Metro area you have the option of going onsite 1 day a week.

We are seeking a self-driven Platform/Build Engineer to join our domain engineering efforts supporting the critical infrastructure developers depend on daily: GitHub Enterprise (GHE), CI infrastructure and agents, and the overall developer experience across three core monorepos.

A major focus of this role is investigating build failures, managing CI capacity and agents, addressing urgent operational unblocking requests, and coordinating across cross-functional engineering teams when issues cross ownership boundaries.

Key Responsibilities

• Hands-on CI & Build Support: Provide direct support to mobile, backend, and data engineers to diagnose and resolve complex build and infrastructure issues.
• CI Infrastructure Management: Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize CI agents, maintaining health, capacity, stability, and resolving operational failures.
• Build Investigation & Reliability: Investigate CI failures, build flakiness, and performance bottlenecks, driving incidents through to root-cause resolution.
• Developer Enablement: Respond to urgent build requests to keep engineering teams moving quickly.
• Cross-Team Collaboration: Coordinate across core platform and developer experience teams, escalating critical decisions and incidents efficiently when needed.
• Documentation & Operations: Enhance existing operational runbooks and create new documentation to improve team response times and infrastructure reliability.

Qualifications & Skills

Hard Skills:

• Deep platform and developer infrastructure experience.
• Broad understanding of scalable CI/CD pipelines and build infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience and familiarity with Bazel.

Soft Skills:

• Service-minded approach to first-line developer support.
• High attention to detail with proactive problem-solving abilities.
• Operational flexibility and relentless follow-through on complex issues.

• T-Shaped Engineer: Broad understanding of developer workflows, CI systems, build tools (Bazel), and agent infrastructure, coupled with the ability to dive deep technically when systems break.
• Operational Execution: Hands-on experience with large-scale platform infrastructure; comfortable operating and troubleshooting systems in production, not just designing them.
• Pragmatic & Self-Driven: Comfortable navigating ambiguous issues without clear ownership by gathering context, identifying key stakeholders, executing solutions, and maintaining transparent communication.
• Developer Champion: Passionate about enabling engineer productivity and making complex infrastructure feel reliable and intuitive.

Role & Organizational Context

• Management Responsibilities: Individual contributor role; no direct or indirect management of others.
• Strategic Impact: Acts as first-line operational support to eliminate developer friction across CI/CD infrastructure and internal tooling. Drives development velocity and exerts broad influence by routing and resolving requests across platform and developer experience teams.
• Key Focus & Metrics (6-12 Months): Central involvement in monorepo migration efforts, measured directly by local and pull-request iteration speeds.
• Operating Environment: Balances reactive developer support with proactive planned platform improvements. Requires self-driven collaboration, primarily overlapping with EU-based teams during EST business hours.
