DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, the International Student Advisor is a key member of the International Services and Engagement Office (ISEO) student advising team.

The incumbent will provide crucial advising and other vital services to international students and their dependents at UC San Diego, so they can maintain their legal non-immigrant status, and advise on other related issues.

Other key responsibilities are to liaise with campus units on bringing international students and their dependents to campus on F or J status, to serve as a resource for the campus regarding procedures, policies, and regulations related to all types of non-immigrant statuses, to produce immigration-related documents relating to F and J status, to assist with federally-mandated compliance requirements related to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) within specified time lines as required by Department of Homeland Security regulations, and to maintain effective working relationships with government agencies, campus departments, and community organizations.

In coordinating outreach and marketing, the advisor will establish and maintain professional networks with key UC San Diego offices, develop orientation and cross-cultural training programs for staff, volunteers, and faculty, participate in team advocacy efforts campus-wide, and promote the involvement of international students as resources in campus and community programs for the mutual benefit of all.

Finally, advisor will ensure that international students and their dependents have successful educational and personal experiences at UC San Diego through appropriate advocacy, advising, and programmatic support.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Professional advising experience with international populations in a university advising operation. Demonstrated theoretical and operational knowledge of university policies and procedures involving internationals, as well as governmental regulations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations affecting international populations, especially those in F and J statuses. Familiarity with the following I-94 statuses: B-1 Business Visitor, WB Business Waiver, B-2 Tourist Visitor, WT Tourist Waiver, E-2, L-2, H-1B, H-4, and US Permanent Resident.

  • Must be able to mediate problems and handle sensitive issues that require tact and confidentiality. Must have demonstrable basic knowledge of counseling and student development.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate patiently, sensitively, and effectively in cross-cultural scenarios, including communicating with individuals and groups from different countries, geography, cultures, languages, socio-economic backgrounds, experiential histories, and more. Must be able to bridge the cross-cultural gaps in communication style between internationals and different administrative offices on campus, and to make effective referrals to campus and community resources.

  • Proven track record in customer service. Demonstrated dedication to international populations and proven ability to sincerely work for their success. Must possess the full range of skills, knowledge and abilities to assess the needs of internationals and their dependents while complying with policies and regulations.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.

  • Proven ability to work as an effective team member in a high-volume operation, understanding when to be an independent professional, when to be a leader, and when to be a team player.

  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Demonstrated skill and experience using Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrated experience with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

  • Demonstrated experience with Sunapsis.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle a high-volume caseload with sensitivity, speed, and accuracy. Must show evidence of using systems and systematic methods to organize and streamline formidable workload.

  • Demonstrated skill in reading dense legal immigration text, understanding new information, coordinating the new information with other regulations and policies, and finally explaining results in clear and simple English to internationals as well as other campus stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated skill in planning, designing, publicizing, implementing, and evaluating student orientation programs, workshops, and cross-cultural activities and events.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills for correspondence (especially by e-mail), detailed information materials, handbooks, websites, etc.

  • Excellent public speaking skills with ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences, particularly audiences with limited English skills and of different cultural backgrounds.

  • Experience working and living in a cross-cultural setting.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident as per regulations from US Department of State and US Department of Homeland Security.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Must work occasional evenings and weekends.

  • Must be available to attend professional conferences.

  • Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.
