Bumble Bee Monitoring Tech

The iBUG lab is looking for a research technician that will help contribute to several ongoing research projects in the lab, including experimental simulations of heat waves and their impacts on pollination, and assistance with coordinating an ongoing monitoring effort for bumble bees at sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The candidate will help to: develop methods for and conduct standardized surveys for bumble bee occupancy and abundance in accordance with national long-term monitoring protocols and help with the development and testing of a novel, non-lethal bumble bee camera trap. This work is supported by the USGS Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Units and the DoD Environmental Security Technology Certification Program.

Responsibilities (non-exhaustive list)

• Assist with research (75%): Identify monitoring sites, develop protocols, arrange travel, and conduct surveys along with initializing camera traps and testing efficacy in a variety of field based contexts.
• Data curation and reporting (15%): Compile and curate survey data and submit to federal agencies in-keeping with federal permitting requirements.
• Lab outreach and communication (10%): Participation in public outreach and education around bumble and wild bee biology, including development of outreach materials.

Required

• BA/BS in entomology, ecology, biology, plant sciences, or related field or a combination of relevant work experience to equal at least four years.
• Research experience in a university or industrial setting
• 30 hours per week
• Ability to lift 50lbs and comfort working regularly in outdoor environments

Preferred

• Strong understanding bumble bee identification and biology
• Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
• Clear and effective written and oral communication skills
• Understanding of the principles of data collection and ethics
• Excellent team-player and capacity to organize people to achieve a common goal
  

Pay Range: $24.65 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
