Position Summary: The Lead Actuary is responsible for leading the development and enhancement of pricing and underwriting tools, supporting large account, excess, and non-admitted business pricing, and contributing expertise in reinsurance pricing and reserving estimation. The position collaborates closely with underwriting, product management, finance, claims, reinsurance, and senior leadership to provide actuarial insights, recommendations, and business solutions that optimize profitability, improve pricing precision, and support organizational objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, development, and maintenance of actuarial pricing, underwriting, and profitability models.
- Perform highly complex ratemaking, reserve analyses, and profitability studies for commercial insurance products and programs.
- Provide actuarial support for large account, excess, specialty, and non-admitted business pricing.
- Support reinsurance pricing, treaty evaluations, and reserve adequacy analyses.
- Serve as the lead technical resource for actuarial projects and initiatives.
- Review, validate, and provide technical guidance on analyses completed by Actuary I and Actuary II staff.
- Assign and coordinate actuarial work among team members and monitor project progress to meet quality and timeliness expectations.
- Mentor and develop actuarial staff through training, coaching, and knowledge sharing.
- Ensure actuarial methodologies, assumptions, models, and documentation comply with accepted actuarial standards and internal controls.
- Partner with underwriting, product, finance, claims, and other business areas to identify opportunities to improve pricing accuracy and business performance.
- Prepare and present complex actuarial findings and recommendations to management and business stakeholders.
- Support state rate filings and regulatory compliance activities as needed.
- Identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities through advanced data analysis and predictive modeling techniques.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts related to actuarial tools, data quality, processes, and methodologies.
- Participates in special projects and performs additional duties as required.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field required.
- 15+ years of professional experience specialized in the actuarial field required.
- FCAS designation required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites.
- Advanced knowledge of ratemaking, reserving, profitability analysis, predictive modeling, and reinsurance pricing.
- Strong proficiency with actuarial software, statistical modeling tools, and data analytics platforms.
- Proficiency in Excel (VBA), PowerPoint, Word, and SQL or other programming languages (e.g. R and Python) required.
- Working knowledge of PowerBI or Tableau preferred.

- Strong ability to quickly learn new programming languages or software.
- Strong ability to resolve problems and develop action plans.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects and provide technical guidance to actuarial staff.
- Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
The salary range for this role is $137,200 - $267,500. The listed annual salary range posted for this position is subject to change and may vary depending on performance, education, experience, skills, geographic location, travel requirements, demonstrated proficiency in the competencies required for the role and business needs. Base pay is just one component of GNY's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards include eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus based on performance.
