Assistant Teaching Professor

This position will have its home in the History Department. The department employs 30 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members. Degree programs include the B.A. in History (approximately 175 students) and the M.A. in History (approximately 35 students). We offer public, digital, and applied history courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, and the department's MA program features a special concentration in Public History. The department also works closely with other interdisciplinary departments and programs across the College, including Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, Capitalism Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Human-Centered AI, Global Studies, Religious Studies, Legal Studies, Health and Medical Humanities, and American Studies. It also houses several journals and professional associations, including the Journal of Urban History and French Historical Studies.

Within a 4-4 teaching load, the successful candidate will teach courses serving history majors and minors, a US History course in the general education program, and will contribute to service to the department, college, and university.

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Required qualifications: Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in History, teaching experience at the collegiate level, and the ability to teach undergraduate courses to support the History Department's undergraduate curriculum, and its major and minor.


Desired qualifications: We are especially interested in applications from historians with teaching expertise and skills in one or more of the following areas: Indigenous History; the US Revolutionary War/Early Republic Era to 1830; the Atlantic World; and Public, Digital, and Applied History. We are also interested in a candidate's potential contributions to thematically or subject-related interdisciplinary studies departments and programs.
Successful candidates will demonstrate teaching excellence and use effective instructional strategies that include: the design and implementation of innovative curricula; advancing strategies to help students develop AI literacy and human-centered, ethical AI research skills; demonstrating dynamic faculty/student classroom communication and interaction; and providing examples of supporting undergraduate student engagement and achievement efforts in a non-classroom setting. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.
