Your Role on the Team

Position Summary:

The Same Day Surgery Registered Nurse provides direct nursing care to patients undergoing scheduled surgical or procedural services. The nurse coordinates care throughout the preoperative and postoperative phases, using the nursing process and following the California Nurse Practice Act, UCI Health policies, and established standards of professional nursing practice.


What It Takes to be Successful

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Perform preoperative assessments, including medical history, medication reconciliation, allergies, vital signs, and readiness for surgery.
  • Verifies patient identity, surgical consent, procedure, site marking, required laboratory results, diagnostic testing, and preoperative orders.
  • Initiates and maintains intravenous access and administers medications and treatments as ordered.
  • Identifies changes in the patient's condition and communicates concerns to the surgeon, anesthesia provider, and appropriate members of the healthcare team.
  • Prepares patients physically and emotionally for surgery or other procedures.
  • Provides patient- and family-centered education regarding the procedure, medications, pain management, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
  • Receives and monitors patients during the postoperative phase in accordance with their condition and assigned level of care.
  • Evaluates pain, nausea, vital signs, surgical sites, activity tolerance, and readiness for discharge.
  • Recognizes and responds promptly to emergencies and postoperative complications.
  • Ensures discharge criteria are met and confirms that the patient has a responsible adult and a safe discharge plan.
  • Documents assessments, interventions, education, patient responses, and discharge information accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia providers, OR/PACU nurses, nursing assistants, and other departments to support safe patient flow and on-time procedure starts.
  • Participates in quality improvement, patient-safety initiatives, regulatory readiness, and departmental education.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and promotes a safe, respectful, and compassionate environment.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in assignments and assists within Perioperative Services based on competency and operational needs.
  • Performs other duties within the scope of registered nursing practice as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
  • Current California Registered Nurse License
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • AHA Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS)
  • Minimum of three years nursing experience in Same Day Surgery/Pre-op and Phase II recovery of surgical patients and patients undergoing procedures in areas such as Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, and/or GI/Endoscopy.
  • All external candidates must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
  • Membership in a professional organization
  • Basic computer skills
  • Two years of recent experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care facility
  • 2+ years of PACU experience
