About the Role

MWH Constructors is seeking a Director of Human Resources (DHR) to lead Human Resources operations throughout the West/TX Business Unit (BU).

The DHR will be responsible for leading and executing the Business Unit's people strategy to attract, develop, engage, and retain a high-performing workforce across office, field, craft, and project locations.

This position is a key member of the West/TX executive leadership team and will play a critical role in building and sustaining a strong company culture, ensuring compliance with employment regulations, developing organizational capability, and aligning HR strategies with business and operational goals.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic business partner who is equally comfortable working with executive leadership, operational teams, project leadership, and employees in both office and field environments.

This position is based in our Broomfield, Colorado office and reports to the West District Manager. This is a full-time, salaried-exempt position and will have direct reports.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership



  • Develop and execute HR strategies that support MWH's mission, growth objectives, operational priorities, and business strategy.
  • Translate the West/TX Business Unit's business plan into an integrated people strategy and HR plan.
  • Partner with executive and operational leadership on organizational design, strategic workforce planning, succession planning, talent management, organizational development, employee engagement, and total rewards.
  • Serve as a strategic business partner to the West/TX executive leadership team.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative, trust-based partnerships with business leaders by developing a deep understanding of the Business Unit's strategy, operations, workforce, and business needs.
  • Provide value-added HR leadership that supports operational excellence and strengthens MWH's competitive advantage.
  • Drive initiatives that improve employee engagement, retention, productivity, and organizational effectiveness across office, field, craft, and project teams.


Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning



  • Lead the HR team and external recruiting partnerships responsible for recruiting and hiring office, craft, field, and project personnel.
  • Partner with operational leaders to develop workforce strategies that ensure an adequate pipeline of talent and alignment between current talent and future business needs.
  • Develop and maintain a forward-looking view of workforce requirements by partnering with operational leaders to forecast labor and staffing needs across multiple projects and support functions.
  • Support workforce mobility and employee transfers while ensuring consistency in processes and policies.
  • Ensure compensation and career planning practices are equitable, competitive, and aligned with MWH's established career paths.
  • Develop and implement strategies to attract and retain highly skilled and diverse talent.
  • Build and maintain an internal pipeline for critical and future leadership roles.
  • Develop and maintain entry-level opportunities that support the long-term development of future talent.
  • Lead and support the Business Unit's intern program.


Employee Relations & Compliance



  • Lead, maintain, and report on compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, including OSHA, EEO, FMLA, and prevailing wage requirements.
  • Provide leadership in employee relations and ensure fair, consistent, and values-based employment practices.
  • Under the direction of Corporate Counsel, oversee investigations, corrective actions, and conflict resolution processes throughout the West/TX Business Unit.
  • Partner with the East and NE/CA/AZ Directors of Human Resources to ensure consistency in HR processes, policies, employment practices, hiring, and terminations across the organization.
  • Guide Business Unit leaders in effectively utilizing the performance management system.
  • Help leaders improve employee performance while maintaining a healthy, respectful, and high-morale work environment.
  • Support leaders in developing succession plans for critical positions, identifying high-performing employees, and ensuring meaningful development plans are in place.
  • Support leaders in addressing employee performance deficiencies and implementing Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs), when appropriate.
  • Prepare and coach leaders to have timely, effective, and consistent performance conversations with employees.


Training & Development



  • Support professional development and performance management programs across established career paths.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to leaders on conducting meaningful career development discussions with employees.
  • Lead a culture of continuous learning, people development, and professional growth throughout the West/TX Business Unit.
  • Support internal accredited development and certification programs, as well as external development opportunities supported by supervisors and business leaders.
  • Ensure training and development priorities are aligned with strategic workforce planning and future organizational needs.


Compensation, Benefits & HR Systems



  • Maintain and continuously improve HR programs and practices while ensuring consistency with corporate policies and organizational standards.
  • Partner with leadership to maintain competitive compensation, mobility, and benefits programs appropriate for the construction industry and the geographic markets in which MWH operates.
  • Support the effective use and continuous improvement of HR systems and processes.


Culture & Employee Engagement



  • Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to the West/TX HR team.
  • Serve as a champion of MWH's culture and values, including safety, integrity, teamwork, accountability, and employee development.
  • Lead communication, recognition, and engagement initiatives that reinforce company values and improve employee morale.
  • Support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives appropriate for construction teams, project environments, and the communities in which we operate.


Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess:



  • Previous supervisory and leadership experience.
  • Broad knowledge and experience across multiple Human Resources disciplines.
  • Strong coaching, consulting, and business partnering skills.
  • Excellent project and program management capabilities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, verbal, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Demonstrated resilience and the ability to respond positively and effectively to organizational change.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and follow-through.
  • The ability and willingness to travel and work from field and project locations as necessary to effectively execute the HR strategy.


Education & Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, and training.
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years of progressive Human Resources experience, with significant experience in employee relations, leadership coaching, performance management, workforce planning, organizational development, and change management.
  • Experience supporting a construction, engineering, industrial, manufacturing, or other project-based organization is preferred.


Compensation

Anticipated Salary Range: $150,000-$165,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
