Professor of the Practice - Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty position as Professor of the Practice. The successful candidate will provide strategic and academic leadership for the Department's Master's programs while also playing a central role in preparing students for careers in the chemical sciences by connecting rigorous academic training with the skills and experiences needed for success in industrial, academic, and other professional settings. This role focuses on leadership of the Department's Master's programs, graduate education, mentorship and career development for our students, and building connections between the Department, industry and other external partners.

Through combined leadership, teaching, mentoring, and external-engagement responsibilities, the Professor of the Practice will play a critical role in the Tufts Chemistry Department. They will shape program strategy, curriculum, admissions, student progress and advising, professional development, program visibility, and recruitment. They will cultivate and sustain relationships with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, and other external partners and develop and coordinate external work experiences. They will also contribute coursework that complements the Department's upper-level and graduate curriculum and draws upon the candidate's expertise, which may include modern research methods, professional skills, data analysis and interpretation, scientific communication, and chemical entrepreneurship. The successful candidate will be expected to identify opportunities for programmatic growth and innovation across all of these responsibilities.

Candidates must hold a PhD in chemistry or a closely related field and have substantial professional experience relevant to the chemical sciences. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to graduate education, mentorship, and professional development. Prior teaching or mentoring experience is preferred and may include undergraduate or graduate teaching, professional education or training, mentorship of trainees or employees, or similar activities. Competitive candidates will have a clear record of leadership and accomplishment in industry, academia, government, or other professional settings, with a demonstrated ability to lead programs, initiatives, teams, or partnerships involving multiple stakeholders. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to develop and implement programmatic initiatives, build consensus, and collaborate effectively across academic and professional communities.

Because external engagement is a central component of this position, the successful candidate should have a strong professional network in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, or related sectors and a demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive partnerships across academic and professional communities. Experience developing internships, collaborative research or training programs, industry partnerships, or other experiential learning opportunities is particularly desirable. As a Professor of the Practice, the successful candidate will be required to maintain an active professional practice outside of Tufts throughout their appointment.
