Job Summary -

The Tack Truck Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating an asphalt distributor truck to apply tack coat, asphalt emulsion, and other liquid asphalt materials in support of paving and construction operations. This position is responsible for proper equipment operation, material application, equipment maintenance, and coordination with the paving crew to ensure quality and efficient production. The position requires strong attention to safety, the ability to work effectively in a team environment, and the ability to operate heavy equipment in varying field conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Operate an asphalt distributor truck to apply tack coat, asphalt emulsion, and other liquid asphalt materials to road surfaces in accordance with project specifications.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the distributor truck, spray bar, pumps, hoses, valves, controls, and related equipment.
  • Safely load, transport, heat, and apply asphalt materials while following manufacturer, project, DOT, OSHA, and company safety requirements.
  • Set and adjust spray bar height, nozzle configuration, application rate, temperature, and truck speed to achieve the required coverage and application rate.
  • Monitor material levels, temperature, pressure, and spray patterns throughout operations and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Coordinate closely with the paving crew, foreman, and other equipment operators to ensure proper timing and application of tack coat.
  • Maintain consistent application rates and coverage while adapting to changing jobsite conditions.
  • Operate distributor controls and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Clean and maintain spray bars, nozzles, pumps, valves, hoses, and other distributor components to prevent buildup and equipment failure.
  • Identify and promptly report equipment malfunctions, leaks, safety concerns, or maintenance needs to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate records of materials used, loads, application rates, production, and daily equipment activities.
  • Follow all applicable DOT and CDL requirements, including required inspections and safe driving practices.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and properly maintained truck and work area.
  • Assist with general paving operations and other jobsite activities as directed by the supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Requirements

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to meet the following requirements:



  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Minimum of 3 years of asphalt distributor, tack truck, or related heavy equipment operating experience preferred.
  • Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) required if applicable to the assigned vehicle and job requirements.
  • Strong understanding of asphalt distributor operation, equipment maintenance, and jobsite safety procedures.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and work effectively around paving equipment, trucks, and active construction operations.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and background check.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and varying jobsite environments.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Reliable transportation required.
