The Alumni Program Coordinatorserves as a crucial member of the UNC School of Medicine's Alumni (SOM Alumni) Team, which aims to foster connections and engagement among alumni, faculty, students and friends while securing philanthropic investments to advance the goals, educational impact, and success of the UNC School of Medicine.

This role is primarily responsible for designing and implementing strategic alumni engagement programs that not only deepen alumni connections to the School but also advance fundraising objectives by cultivating a strong, sustainable pipeline of philanthropic support for its educational mission.

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute regional engagement strategies in key markets-both within and beyond North Carolina-to create targeted discovery and cultivation opportunities for alumni. This includes organizing events and leveraging local alumni networks to identify and engage prospective supporters.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with School of Medicine departments, centers, and institutes to align alumni engagement efforts. Partner with internal stakeholders to expand outreach to under-engaged groups such as resident and fellow alumni, Health Sciences alumni, and emerging affinity groups, ensuring inclusive and representative programming.
  • Recruit, train, and steward a diverse group of alumni volunteers to support School priorities. Volunteers will contribute to initiatives such as career mentoring, reunion planning, student and trainee transitions, and regional alumni outreach, helping to extend the School's impact and visibility.
  • Coordinate and support signature alumni events, including point of entry programs like the Distinguished Medical Awards, milestone reunions, and regional receptions. Ensure events are strategically designed to foster meaningful connections and identify potential philanthropic interest.
  • Track and report on alumni engagement metrics, including event participation, volunteer involvement, and pipeline development outcomes. Use data to assess program effectiveness and inform future strategy.

Education:

  • Bachelors degree required

Professional Experience

  • At least 2 years of related experience in university administration, alumni relations, nonprofit management, or other related area.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and build strong relationships across disciplines.
  • Superior written and verbal communication.
  • Working knowledge of computer-related office tools and database management. Proficiency with standard office software and comfort using databases or CRM systems to manage and track engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise discretion, and adapt in dynamic or ambiguous environments.
  • Experience developing and maintaining strong, interdisciplinary working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess processes and recommend improvements.
  • Flexibility to travel and work occasional evenings or weekends to support events and key initiatives.
