Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of the Cleanroom Research Laboratory, the Process Engineer will develop and facilitate various thin-film process development/flows and device fabrication, train, and support users in the UTD Cleanroom Research Laboratory. The Process Engineer will work with other cleanroom staff to support the daily operation and maintenance of the laboratory. The candidate will be responsible for supporting and troubleshooting equipment and process issues related to plasma etch, CVD tools, atmospheric furnaces, other thin-film deposition process tools as needed, and various thin-film characterization tools. The candidate will also be assisting in interactions with faculty, students, and staff to identify cleanroom capability requirements to support ongoing and future research projects.
Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree (Doctorate degree preferred) in engineering or the natural sciences and 6 months of related work experience. Hands-on experience as part of Graduate research is acceptable.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to work independently on various process and metrology tools used in cleanroom/semiconductor research laboratory involving inorganic and organic materials/thin films.
  • Must be detail-oriented, a problem solver, and a decision maker.
  • Willing to try various troubleshooting strategies to resolve issues.
  • Effective communication skills, excellent public relations skills with students, faculty, staff, and external users.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions

  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOP), define process parameters, and run qualification runs as needed on various deposition and etch tools.
  • Train internal and external users on various process and metrology tools.
  • Support and troubleshoot process-related issues on various tools.
  • Support operation and maintenance of plasma etch tools, CVD tools, and atmospheric furnaces.
  • As needed, be a back-up trainer of internal and external users on various process and metrology tools.
  • Take ownership of equipment to ensure the equipment is maintained and operates within specifications.
  • Create instrument operation manuals as needed to help users navigate complex instruments.
  • Assist in start-up of new tools and other activities as needed to sustain operation of the Cleanroom.
  • Take on other tasks as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work in a Class 10000 cleanroom for extended periods.
  • Wear full cleanroom attire (smock, boots, gloves, safety glasses, masks).
  • Work with and/or around chemicals (solids, liquids and gases).
  • Stand for up to 8 hours at a time.
