Job Details

The Patient Transport Trainer plays a key role in ensuring safe, efficient, and compassionate patient transportation throughout the hospital. This position is responsible for transporting patients to and from clinical and patient care areas, training and evaluating new transport staff, supporting departmental operations, and serving as a subject matter expert on patient transport procedures, safety protocols, and customer service standards.

The ideal candidate is service-oriented, safety-focused, and committed to delivering an exceptional experience for patients, families, and healthcare staff.

Location: Christiana Hospital - Newark Campus

Shift: 10:30pm - 7:00am - Morning Shift (Full - Time)

Additional Requirements: Every Other Weekend and Holiday

Key Responsibilities Patient Transport & Operations
  • Transport patients safely via stretcher, wheelchair, bed, and specialized transport vehicles to and from patient care and clinical service areas.
  • Assist clinical personnel with patient transfers to and from transport vehicles.
  • Provide transportation support for clinical equipment, medications, paperwork, specimens, and other essential items.
  • Support dispatch operations as needed to ensure timely patient movement.
  • Assist in the care, maintenance, and proper operation of departmental equipment.
  • Perform Service Assistant I, II, and III duties as assigned.
Training & Development
  • Train new employees on:
    • Patient transport procedures
    • Safe equipment operation
    • Equipment disinfection practices
    • Patient transfer assistance techniques
    • Customer service standards
    • Effective communication and handoff procedures
  • Train staff on specialty and auxiliary functions, including:
    • Oxygen rounding
    • Clinical/specimen rounding
    • Physical Therapy Gym transports
    • Procedure transports
    • Labor & Delivery transports
  • Evaluate new hires using departmental training checklists and performance standards.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and constructive guidance to support employee development.
  • Notify supervisors and training specialists of any safety, performance, or service concerns.
  • Assist with the development of training materials and educational resources.
  • Partner with leadership to facilitate department training sessions, workshops, and skills stations.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
Safety & Compliance
  • Perform all duties in accordance with established safety policies and departmental procedures.
  • Report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, and safety violations in a timely manner.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and organizational privacy standards.
  • Follow proper infection prevention and equipment disinfection procedures.
  • Participate in educational programs, departmental meetings, and required training activities.
Qualifications Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of customer service experience required.
  • Healthcare, patient transport, hospital operations, or training experience preferred.
Certifications
  • Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to train, coach, and evaluate employees effectively.
  • Knowledge of basic body mechanics and safe patient handling techniques.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including email, web-based training, and timekeeping systems.
  • Ability to learn and operate departmental vehicles such as golf carts and Segways.
  • Ability to use smartphones and mobile applications for job assignments.
  • Strong customer service skills and commitment to patient satisfaction.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, sound judgment, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to perform CPR.
  • Knowledge of hospital layouts and departmental locations preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, clinical staff, and hospital leadership.
Physical Requirements
  • Continuous standing and walking throughout the shift.
  • Frequent pushing and pulling of patients and equipment, often involving considerable weight.
  • Repetitive motion of hands, wrists, fingers, and arms.
  • Occasional bending, crouching, lifting, and lowering of equipment and patients.
  • Must successfully complete a back evaluation examination.
Work Environment
  • Frequent handwashing and infection prevention practices required.
  • Occasional skin exposure to diluted cleaning agents.
  • Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and other healthcare-related hazards.
  • Fast-paced healthcare environment requiring responsiveness, professionalism, and excellent customer service.
Why Join Our Team?

As a Patient Transport Trainer, you will have the opportunity to make a direct impact on patient care by ensuring safe transportation practices, supporting staff development, and helping create a positive healthcare experience for patients, families, and caregivers every day.

This position has a starting rate of $18.08 per hour, regardless of prior experience. After six months of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $21.15 per hour. After one year of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $22.18 per hour. This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare's good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
