Medical Assistant - General Dermatology

Employment Duration: 3 months

Under supervision and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Staff, the Medical Assistant II assists in the delivery of care to patients in an ambulatory multi-specialty group practice. Responsibilities include a variety of patient care and nursing support procedures to promote positive patient care outcomes. The position performs assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of primary and specialty care services and adheres to Medical Center telephone and house standards. The employee may be asked to float to any UCSF Outpatient Dermatology site.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine clinical functions including:
  • Obtain vital signs, height, weight, allergies, history of skin cancer, and document chief complaints.
  • Document interpreter use as appropriate and coordinate interpreter services for appointments.
  • Assist nurses, providers, and patients in preparation for examinations and procedures.
  • Complete department-specific competencies required to perform or assist with specialty procedures.
  • Perform outpatient sterile processing procedures, including Cidex OPA processing, and maintain required logs.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for transport to the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Serve as a chaperone for medical providers as needed.
  • Transport patients safely as directed.
  • Monitor patient flow throughout the clinic.
  • Obtain specimens and perform laboratory procedures in accordance with specimen handling policies.
  • Prepare biopsy documentation, maintain biopsy logs, transport specimens to Dermatopathology, and review wound care instructions with patients.
  • Maintain required clinic logs, including temperature, disaster cabinet, and crash cart logs.
  • Complete referrals as ordered by providers.
  • Obtain insurance authorizations for medications.
  • Perform clinical activities accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Assist providers with preparing and sending patient communications.
  • Comply with infection control, safety, administrative, and clinical practice policies, including applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure medication cabinets remain locked at all times.
• Support communication and patient care by:
  • Demonstrating professionalism and courtesy in telephone communications.
  • Upholding Medical Center House Standards.
  • Notifying providers of patient delays and service issues and advocating for efficient clinic flow.
  • Communicating provider delays to the front office team and patients as appropriate.
  • Sharing pertinent patient information with the healthcare team.
  • Reporting concerns to nursing staff or supervisors.
  • Offering suggestions to improve clinic operations.
  • Assisting patients with concerns using conflict management skills.
  • Utilizing APeX within the Medical Assistant scope of practice, including documentation, order entry, medication refill encounters, scheduling, and telephone encounters.
  • Working collaboratively as a team member while adapting to changing responsibilities and maintaining positive patient interactions.
• Support clinic operations by:
  • Maintaining clean, organized, and well-stocked exam rooms, laboratory areas, and workspaces.
  • Ordering and maintaining supplies and laboratory equipment.
  • Reviewing laboratory logs and printing results for providers.
  • Obtaining insurance authorizations for medications and procedures.
  • Scheduling complex procedures and coordinating patient services.
  • Assisting with clinic staffing coverage as assigned.
  • Following infection control procedures and equipment cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization policies.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of three months of experience as a Medical Assistant in General Dermatology and Pediatric Dermatology clinical practice.
• Knowledge and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position.
• Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
