What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Product Design Engineer. The selected candidate will be part of a highly developed engineering and assembly team. Our team has an organized system for integrating, supporting and mentoring our teammates. While working on exciting programs, you will have many opportunities for career growth and development. Center 5400 performs R&D on a multitude of Ground, Air and Space based systems in support of the Nation's need. It is not uncommon for our teams to be supporting fast-turn proof of concept projects, while also working through multi-year or technology maturation programs. Best of all, our Engineers frequently are involved in the procurement, assembly and fielding of the technologies they developed!

Example of a day in the life of a 5400 Product Design Engineer:

  • Determines product requirements based on user needs.
  • Initiates, designs, develops, executes, and evaluates new processes, products, or systems for implementing and integrating engineering solutions.
  • Produces designs, models, and product definition of complex objects.
  • Uses CAD software to develop design and analysis of concepts.
  • Evaluates design options using optimization techniques.
  • Creates the design definition documentation utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) ensuring that the design can be effectively manufactured and inspected.

*Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience designing and defining for manufacturing aerospace hardware and systems.
  • Experience and comfort leading design definition activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of and applied experience with scientific and engineering methods.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with designing, planning, and executing design, and development projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with implementing Sandia policies affecting research, design, and development activities, projects, or initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines.
  • Ability to understand and interpret various design documents, such as drawings and schematics.
  • Ability to use and apply standard CAD or CAM principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Demonstrated technical judgment in selecting methods and techniques for product development.
  • Applies configuration management principles to manage design authorization and change.
  • Ability to work closely with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.
  • Ability to model behaviors that reflect Sandia's core values.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for testing and or fielding occasionally. It is not uncommon for a typical year in the 5400 team to have 1-3 each trips that are 3-5 days long, and less commonly, 1-2 trips that might extend to 1-3 weeks. We do work with our team members to not place undue travel burden on them.
About Our Team

Enabling Aerospace Systems, Department 5414, is a Concept to Field-Test provider focusing primarily on mechanical engineering, design and integration of flight systems.

In addition to demonstrating advanced concept viability and advancing what is possible, we build systems that are intended to be fielded, whether that is to perform in flight, or to meet some other National need; we put theory into practice.

We have a highly developed system for developing and supporting our team members. We value mentoring and offer exposure to internal mobility. Our Engineers and Technologists are encouraged to participate in all phases of the product lifecycle including design, assembly and test; what we learn at the assembly bench is as valuable as what we learn at the desktop.

No matter what level of experience you may have, there are team members in 5400 who can partner in mentorship with you. We have high level experts in very unique capabilities who are always glad to exchange knowledge.

We value work-life-balance and understand that a good teammate is a balanced teammate.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
