Job Summary

The Traveling Data Center Technician II is responsible for installing, terminating, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining fiber optic and structured cabling infrastructure within mission-critical data center environments. This role supports infrastructure build-outs, rack and stack activities, outside plant (OSP) installations, and customer equipment deployments while ensuring compliance with safety standards and installation specifications. The ideal candidate has strong fiber optic experience, is comfortable traveling extensively, and can adapt to changing project requirements in fast-paced environments.

Job Responsibilities




  • Install fiber optic and structured cabling infrastructure within data center environments.



  • Perform cable rough-in, dressing, labeling, and cable management.



  • Terminate fiber optic and copper cabling according to industry standards.



  • Install and configure single-mode and multi-mode fiber using various connector types, including ST, LC, SC, and SC-APC.



  • Perform Fluke and OTDR testing to validate cable installations.



  • Troubleshoot fiber optic connectivity and infrastructure issues.



  • Pull, dress, terminate, test, and patch fiber, copper, and Cat6 cabling.



  • Rack and stack customer equipment and complete server rack build-outs.



  • Install rack elevations, cabinets, ladder racks, fiber trays, power trays, and cable management systems.



  • Perform infrastructure installations, including customer equipment and hardware assembly.



  • Support Outside Plant (OSP) fiber installations into data center facilities.



  • Receive materials and assemble hardware for deployment.



  • Read and interpret blueprints and installation documentation.



  • Build telecommunications closets, including mounting backboards, racks, patch panels, cross-connects, fiber optic hardware, and related infrastructure.



  • Maintain professional written and verbal communication with team members and management.



  • Follow all OSHA regulations, safety procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.



  • Maintain clean and organized work areas throughout project execution.



  • Adapt to changing project priorities and support continuous learning and development.




Job Requirements




  • Minimum of 2 years of data center technician experience.



  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on fiber optic installation experience.



  • Experience with fiber optic termination, testing, troubleshooting, and structured cabling installations.



  • Experience with rack and stack, server rack build-outs, and telecommunications closet construction.



  • Experience pulling, dressing, terminating, testing, and patching fiber, copper, and Cat6 cabling.



  • Experience performing Fluke testing on copper and small strand fiber.



  • Experience performing OTDR testing on 144-strand fiber.



  • Basic copper and Cat6 termination skills required.



  • Understanding of standard cable color codes.



  • OSP fiber installation experience preferred.



  • Fiber splicing experience is a plus.



  • Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints is highly preferred.



  • Active OSHA 10 certification preferred.



  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.



  • Ability to work safely on ladders and scissor lifts.



  • Ability to work in confined spaces.



  • Ability to stand and walk for extended shifts.



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.



  • Proficiency using basic hand tools, including screwdrivers, tape measures, snips, pliers, punch-down tools, flashlights, work boots, gloves, and tool pouches.



  • Strong attention to detail, adaptability, and willingness to learn new skills.



  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Extensive travel is required.



  • Travel schedule consists of approximately four consecutive weeks onsite followed by a long weekend at home (Friday through Sunday), returning to the project site on Monday.



  • Current work schedule is six 12-hour shifts per week (Monday through Saturday), with plans to transition to six 10-hour shifts as staffing increases.



  • Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, and changing assignments is required.
