The University of Virginia Facilities Management (FM) department is currently seeking a Recycling Supervisor to support Facilities Management's sustainability goals of providing a state-of-the-art recycling program for the University. This position is responsible for the supervision of recycling staff involved in the collection and sorting of recyclable materials. Recycling Department supervisors also:
- manage UVA's recycling sort facility, where recycling staff hand sort and bale recyclable material collected on campus
- ensure trash dumpsters, roll offs, and compactors are emptied by the trash contractor and that trash compactors are operating correctly
- oversee the storage and transportation of confidential material, pallets, metal, batteries, and light bulbs collected throughout the University
- manage waste management activities for special events and waste requests on campus
FM supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic, and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, FM is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVa's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds, as well as other University-owned and leased properties. Responsibilities
- Plans, assigns, supervises, trains, and evaluates work of assigned recycle workers, provides technical expertise to staff, and helps establish work goals and objectives.
- Reviews, develops, and modifies crew schedules and routes in assigned areas, and determines work priorities for crew members.
- Ensures all required work is completed in a timely and professional manner.
- Resolves problems with crew members, mediates conflicts encountered during daily operations, determines appropriate solutions, and promotes teamwork. Encourages regular communication and informs crews of relevant business issues and their impact on the organization.
- Develops goals, documents performance, provides performance feedback, and formally evaluates the work of employees. Assists staff in achieving performance standards and identifies opportunities for continual improvement of performance standards.
- Helps select candidates for open recycle worker positions and sits on hiring panel for interviews.
- Prefer that candidate has experience operating large equipment/vehicles or would be willing to learn how to operate large equipment/vehicles if selected for the position.
- Performs all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, local, and agency regulations.
- This position requires supervising and working alongside recycling crews during special event weekends, such as Graduation, Student Move In/Move Out, home football games, etc.
- This position requires supervising and working alongside crews during snow removal operations.
- This position requires the supervisor to aid recycling crews in day-to-day and special event collection activities.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Four years of experience in material management, operations/logistics, hospitality/service industry, or related field. Experience inclusive of a supervisory role or demonstrated responsibilities leading others.
- Licensure/Certifications: none.
Physical Demands Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties. Salary Range The anticipated hiring range is $24.00-$28.00, commensurate with experience.
