Summary:

The Exercise Specialist is responsible for development and supervising all components of Minges Wellness Center exercise programming. The exercise specialist provides exercise and fitness education to the community on and off site.

Responsibilities:

1. Performs duties of Exercise Specialist. a. Exercises are coordinated and led for group fitness classes using ACSM professional and competent techniques and guidelines . b. Exercise testing/prescriptions are written and implemented matching clients needs using ACSM standards. Record keeping is current and kept for proper documentation in specific setting. c. Program Director is appraised of status of clients progress or problems. In CR, cardiac monitoring is used and CR policy and procedures are followed. Serves as educational resource for all exercise staff. Oversees all exercise programming and attends all staff group classes yearly. d. Safety and emergency procedures are identified and practiced. Equipment is maintained. e. Works well with physicians to coordinate exercise plans with clients. Ensures that screenings are completed and physician orders are tracked. f. Identifies complimentary health promotion programming for chronic medical conditions. Establishes policy and procedure/guidelines for special populations. 2. Promotes healthy living through the development of fitness and educational programs and participation in community and business events. Fitness programs are designed, implemented and evaluated. Working relationships are developed within internal and external community. Customers verbalize value of healthy living programs.Outcomes are measured where possible. Growth is seen in services, programs and customers. Wellness Center newsletter is coordinated quarterly. Educational presentations are made to the community. 3. Is a valued team member. Excellent customer service is provided. Participates in team approach to successfully execute events. Greets, answers phone and communicates with the custome in an outstanding manner.Uses database to track customers. Coordinates payment racking following established procedures. Prioritizes new equipment needs and coordinates staffing schedule to ensure Wellness Center has staffing and certified instructors are on duty during hours of operation.Program assessment is used. Customer surveys are implemented yearly. New programs are designed that enhance creativity, customer appeal, and utilize national trends in clinical exercise modalities. Attends team meetings. Identifies problems and seeks ways to improve setting. Uses all forms of communication to keep all exercise staff current with operational changes. Coordinates preventive maintenance for exercise equipment.

Other information:

  • EDUCATION
    • Have bachelor's degree in an exercise related field. Prefer prior experience in adult fitness, special population exercise programming. Prefer a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology, Sports Medicine or Physical Education/Fitness.
  • EXPERIENCE
    • Hospital based experience, internship in medically based fitness facility preferred. Working experience in a healthcare facility preferred. Must have experience writing exercise prescriptions, outcome measurements, goal setting, individual behavior modification training. Experience in a group exercise setting necessary.
  • LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
    • BCLS certified. Exercise certification and /or ACSM certification preferred. Must be willing to attain ACSM certification within 6 months of hire. ACLS certification required for Cardiac Rehab position.
  • OTHER SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
    • Will provide fitness assessment, health behavior modification counseling.
    • Strong verbal and writing skills necessary for effective communication with physicians, employees, patients, and the community. Word Processing and computer knowledge desired. Public speaking required. Will serve as consultant to other areas of the hospital on issues of fitness/exercise.
