Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) located in scenic Upstate NY is a multi-campus College with locations in Troy and Malta New York. Laboratory Assistant - Technical Services HV-CS-9712
Description of Position:
The Laboratory Assistant maintains and monitors laboratory supplies and services used by faculty and students. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and is required to maintain the cleanliness of labs, storage areas and equipment and may be required to calibrate the laboratory equipment used. A Laboratory Assistant may also assist in the preparation and demonstration of laboratory assignments. Depending on the laboratory to which assigned, the incumbent must be acquainted with laboratory operations and equipment of that particular field. The work is performed under the general supervision of technical supervisors or professional staff with some latitude permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least FOUR months immediately preceding the date of the test. Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least FOUR months preceding the date of the written test.
Please Note: The successful candidate must take and pass the Rensselaer County Civil Service exam for Laboratory Assistant, when offered, and be reachable on the Laboratory Assistant list to qualify for permanent appointment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from High School (or possession of an equivalency diploma) and two years of full-time paid experience working in a particular kind of scientific, medical, or technical laboratory. -or-
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's Degree in the scientific, medical, or technical field.

An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in the above criteria.
Applicants should have good knowledge of laboratory terminology, procedures and equipment relating to the particular classification; good knowledge of the basic principles of the particular scientific or technical field; working knowledge of the methods and practices used in receiving, storing, maintaining and issuing laboratory supplies and materials; effectively and safely operate, adapt, and maintain scientific materials; ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; ability to prepare and set up laboratory demonstrations; ability to prepare and maintain accurate and precise reports; confidentiality; good sound judgment; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES: The Laboratory Assistant performs the work under the general supervision of technical supervisors or professional staff with some latitude permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments in accordance with defined procedures and performs the following duties:
* Prepares solutions and reagents for biological, chemical, and/or physics laboratory use.
* Prepares solutions, growth media, and live cultures for microbiology use.
* Maintains and sets up laboratory equipment for biology, chemistry, physics, and/or forensics labs.
* Orders, maintains, and controls inventory of laboratory supplies including but not limited to solvents, chemical compounds, bacterial growth media, preserved specimens, and glassware.
* Issues lab equipment and supplies to faculty and students, and assists in services performed by the Technical Services Department.
* Maintains the cleanliness of laboratories, storage areas, and equipment.
* Prepares and maintains a variety of related records and reports that includes the Technical Services Department's inventory of equipment and furnishings.
* Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs to laboratory equipment.
* Performs related tasks involving skilled laboratory support as assigned on both the HVCC Main Campus and the Malta Extension Center (HVCC North Branch Campus).
This is a 40-hour/week, 12-month position with an hourly rate of $ 24.9055. Assignments may be on the HVCC North campus, Malta, NY and/or on the HVCC main campus, Troy, NY.
