We are actively seeking a CONTROLLER to join IHC's Executive Team in our Chicagoland office, with HQ in Elgin, IL.

The Controller reports to the CEO and COO and is responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and compliance functions for a growing construction organization. This role partners closely with the President, Operations, and Project Management teams to ensure accurate project financial reporting, strong internal controls, effective cash flow management, and profitability analysis.
The ideal candidate is a direct finance leader with deep construction industry experience, including percentage-of-completion accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, project forecasting, and subcontractor compliance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Leadership & Reporting
  • Lead all accounting and financial operations of the company.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Prepare and present accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Develop monthly management reporting packages.
  • Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Maintain internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Coordinate annual audits and tax preparation activities.

Construction Accounting & Job Costing
  • Oversee all job cost accounting and project financial reporting.
  • Review and monitor project budgets, cost-to-complete estimates, and profitability forecasts.
  • Ensure accuracy of Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Work closely with COO to identify cost overruns, billing opportunities, and financial risks.
  • Analyze project margins and provide actionable recommendations to improve profitability.
  • Manage change order tracking and revenue recognition processes.

Cash Flow & Treasury Management
  • Prepare and maintain weekly and long-term cash flow forecasts.
  • Monitor company liquidity and working capital.
  • Manage banking relationships and debt compliance requirements.
  • Oversee lines of credit, bonding capacity, and banking facilities.
  • Support strategic capital planning and growth initiatives.

Billing, Collections & Compliance
  • Oversee monthly project billing.
  • Ensure timely collection of accounts receivable.
  • Monitor lien waivers, subcontractor compliance, insurance certificates, and vendor documentation.
  • Review sales tax filings and regulatory reporting requirements.

Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Develop financial models to support strategic decision-making.
  • Analyze trends in labor, equipment, materials, and overhead costs.
  • Partner with operational leaders to improve forecasting accuracy.

Team Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team.
  • Establish performance expectations and accountability measures.
  • Drive process improvements, automation initiatives, and system enhancements.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
  • 10+ years of construction accounting.
  • 3+ years of Controller Level (or equivalent) experience within the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Construction accounting
    • Job costing
    • WIP reporting
    • Union labor environment
    • Revenue recognition
    • Financial statement preparation
Preferred
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting
  • 7 + years in public accounting background.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP) Certification.
  • Experience with construction ERP systems such as:
    • Viewpoint Vista
    • Prophix
