The Department:

The Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department is the steward of approximately 450 acres of parkland, featuring community and historic parks, senior services, playgrounds, multigenerational facilities, aquatic centers, tennis courts, and multi-use fields. Nearly 40 percent of the city is dedicated to open space, and the department maintains approximately 40 linear miles of recreational trails.

The Position:

This is the most senior level in the Recreation Leader job family. It requires specialist knowledge for high-volume programs, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and proven experience coordinating complex events or programs within a specific area of responsibility.

This recruitment will fill a position at the Carlsbad Senior Center. Experience working with the public, especially seniors, is strongly preferred. Requires flexible availability, including required Saturday morning shifts.

*Part-time employee cannot exceed 980 total hours worked within one fiscal year*

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee internal and external rentals, including guidelines, procedures, and scheduling
  • Perform facility setups and tear-downs for programs and events
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training documents for facility staff
  • Input and maintain program information in the City of Carlsbad registration website
  • Assist customers with registration, refunds, transfers, and general inquiries
  • Monitor trends through attendance data and customer survey responses
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, contracts, data entry and management of sensitive information
  • Ensure program goals and objectives are met - personally, through team members, or by supervising staff

Qualifications

  • Understanding of Recreation programming methods, processes, and procedures
  • Ability to lead staff and oversee the day-to-day operations
  • Professional oral and written communication techniques
  • Strong customer service skills and a friendly, calm, patient demeanor with seniors
  • Comfortable responding to and resolving emergency situations
  • Manage programs/projects, including monitoring resources and results
  • Use computers and related software applications
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Adapt and adjust course on current and future program coordination

Experience & Education

Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical ways to obtain the knowledge and abilities include:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least 1 year of experience performing duties comparable to a Senior Recreation Leader
  • Experience working with the public
  • Must have a valid California Class C Driver's license
