POSITION SUMMARY

The Canine Trainerwillbe responsible forutilizingoperant and classical canine training techniques to improve odor detection of previously trained and certified explosives and narcotics canines in public transit venues. TheTrainerutilizesapproved training methods for controlled aggression, obedience training, and other materials as necessary to improve both handler and canine performance. The Trainer alsoassistswith preparing canines for new operational missions in new and/or evolving operating environments. The Trainer is assigned to a specific geographical region andis responsible fordeveloping customized training programs for each canine team within the assigned region,in order tocontinuously improve odor detection, search techniques, operation in distracting environments and high population density venues. Training also includes weekly skills and maintenance training for the following types of detection canines Explosive Detection Canines (EDC), Narcotic Detection Canines (NDC) and Explosive Trailing Detection Canines (ETDC).

RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Evaluate student progress and mentor Handlers in all areas of academicprogress


  • Prepare Handler tests and evaluations to measure Handler progress and reinforce core tenants of search patters, tactics,techniquesand procedures (TTP's) to ensure Handler properly deploys canine to maximize odor detection of static and mobile odortargets


  • Prepare and conduct certifications asrequiredfor NDC, EDC and ETDC


  • Develop and follow established training protocolsin accordance withstatements of work and standard operatingprocedures


  • Develop and implement remedial training programs tailored to individual Canine Handlers and/or canine EDC or NDC


  • Document training using company and/or client canine training system to include thefollowing;weekly training, monthly summary, remedial training plans, upload video recordings of training sessions, and include details on training location(s), EDC/NDC training aids used, lessons learned, and commentsregardingHandler and canine performance


  • Train and manage multiple canines through the training process, frominitialtraining through certification and continual training of teams during deployments tofacilitatecontinuous improvement of canine and Handlercapabilities


  • Arrange operational exercisesin order toreplicate real life scenarios and enable canines to work independently in high population density environments with people moving to and from mass transitenvironments


  • Properlyutilizeand maintain canine training equipment to include safety equipment for canines andTrainers


  • Secure and account for canine training aids, equipment, company vehicles, canine trailers, company assets, and resources


  • Maintain the cleanliness of training areas, company vehicles, canine trailers, resources, and facilities to reduce and/oreliminatecross contamination of explosive or narcotic trainingaids


  • Follow standard operating procedures when conducting and performing operationalsearches


  • Assistwhen needed in instruction of new Handlers and Trainers


  • May include Handler duties, which will includemaintaininga canine team certification and prepared for deployments to contract locations ifrequired


  • Travel of up to 35% to contract locations Nationwide


  • Must be willing tooperatecompany vehicle (during on-site training)


  • Work conditions can vary from a busy training environment to fieldwork, both subject to frequent interruptions. Frequent work outside and in inclement weather conditions isrequired, including heat, cold, and humidity. May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. Normal work hours are Monday-Friday6:30am to3:00 pm, however some extended or weekend hours may berequired, and the work schedule will vary. Travel may also berequired.

QUALIFICATIONS



  • Minimum of two years of experience training canines in body born explosive detection, or Explosive Trailing Detection (ETD) methodologies


  • Canine certifications preferred, but notrequired, that depictpreviousareas of expertise with canine training, or a Canine Handler (detection) course with a certificate of completion from a credible, recognized canine detectioncourse


  • Demonstrated experience in solving unique training problems with detection dogs and knowledgeable of how to evaluate and apply canine training principles,conditioningandstandards


  • Must haveandmaintaina valid USdriverslicense and satisfactory driverrecord


  • Effective oral and written communication skills


  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time and multiple priorities tocompletion


  • Problem solving skills with an analytical thoughtprocess


  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changingenvironment
  • Must be able to lift and carry awkward items weighing up to 100 lbs
  • Requires standing for long periods of time in all weather conditions
  • Requires intermittent sitting, walking, running, climbing, squatting, stretching, bending, and kneeling
  • Requires constant use of hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms
