THE POSITION

As a Legal Assistant 1 with the Department of Human Services, you help manage key steps in the appeals process and support Administrative Law Judges. This position allows you to build strong organizational and legal support skills. Your efforts help protect important rights while keeping cases on track. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the appeals process by reviewing submissions, preparing documents, and ensuring cases move forward accurately and on time. As a Legal Assistant 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Appeal Review: Examine appeals and apply procedural regulations to determine proper processing steps
  • Deadline Tracking: Monitor due dates and adjust schedules to ensure timely case movement
  • Scheduling Support: Prepare, update, and distribute hearing schedules and notices for all involved parties
  • Document Preparation: Create legal documents such as orders, subpoenas, and schedules for Administrative Law Judges
  • Record Maintenance: Organize electronic and physical case files to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Correspondence Handling: Review incoming legal correspondence and route or document it appropriately

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time based upon individual eligibility, operational needs of the Bureau, and successful completion of the probationary period and training period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: The starting salary is non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement or investigative work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
