Position Summary

Under general direction from the Elevator Shop Senior Superintendent, the Lead Elevator Mechanic oversees and coordinates the work of Elevator Mechanics, Apprentices, Facilities Mechanics, and Facilities Workers who inspect, repair, modify and/or alter elevator electro/mechanical systems and related equipment campus-wide, deferred maintenance projects, periodic scheduled maintenance; and trouble call response. Review and coordinate daily schedules and work; interface with client. Conduct job site assessment and evaluation; develop and review estimates; resolve project problems, coordinate outages, and ensure job is closed and charged properly; participate in the Disaster Initial Response Team. As a working lead, perform a full range of skilled tasks required of a Journeyperson Elevator Mechanic. Lead must be able to work independently and follow through on assignments. State of California Certified Competent Conveyance Mechanic License is required.

Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of the materials, equipment, methods and tools of the elevator mechanic trade, including achievement of operational level skills. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: all levels of elevator code requirements, e.g., current State of California Elevator Safety Codes, Fire and Seismic Safety Codes and their specific interpretations and applications to appropriate elevator components; all elevator systems, e.g. hydraulic, electric, gearless, variable voltage and solid state; theories of operating and servicing procedures of elevator systems, e.g., sequence of operations, motor controls, and dispatching. (Required)
  • Ability to: troubleshoot problems, signs of damage or deterioration in various electrical and mechanical systems; read, interpret and understand technical language in wiring diagrams. Ability to modify and/or adapt designs, procedures or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications; (Required)
  • Skill in: estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish tasks; adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing 4-digit numbers and fractions in order to calculate layouts and offsets, and provide accurate cost calculations. (Required)
  • Ability to: prioritize, schedule and coordinate work projects; direct and inspect the work of subordinates; train and evaluate subordinates' effectiveness against job standards; resolve any inaccuracies in workmanship and/or correct customer concerns. - Required (Required)
  • Ability to: establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors and outside agencies; work independently and follow through on assignments; use oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise and grammatically correct information. (Required)
  • Skill in: writing simple English phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend; reading technical instructions related to the trade in order to comprehend written work instructions, equipment operating instructions, and/or other documents related to the job functions; reading, understanding and interpreting administrative policy and procedure manuals. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: standard safe work practices; UBC, OSHA and ADA requirements as it relates to the function. (Required)
  • Ability to recognize discrepancies of ADA and Fire/Life/Safety codes at each job and report to supervisor. (Required)
  • Ability to: stand, crawl, walk and stoop; push and pull, lift and lower objects weighing up to 50 lbs. using mechanical assistance, hoist, lower, push and pull large objects weighing up to 500 lbs; work indoors and outdoors in wet or humid weather conditions and other conditions. (Required)
  • Ability to: distinguish among colors; work in confined spaces; work overtime, weekends and various shifts as necessary (Required)
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software. (Required)

  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
  • Must possess State of California Certified Competent Conveyance Mechanic License (Required)
