Job Summary: Under immediate supervision of the Advocacy Manager, the Advocacy Strategist performs a wide variety of functions. Responsible for building a grassroots activist network and building coalitions with allied organizations and constituencies. This role will recruit, train, and mobilize supporters and volunteers to act on behalf of Planned Parenthood North Central States (PPNCS) and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa. The Advocacy Strategist will work to carry out legislative, organizing, and electoral goals as part of a dynamic Public Affairs team that builds a sustainable base of support for Planned Parenthood North Central States. Advocacy Strategists are advocates in implementing our mission of "Advancing and protecting sexual and reproductive health care for all." They may perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:
- One to three years' experience in advocacy, organizing, political campaigns, or volunteer management, or a bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Must be able to travel to and from external sites, within the required region, including conveyance of applicable program materials on a quarterly basis, including occasional overnight weekend travel.
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities: ADVOCACY & ORGANIZING
- Partner with the Advocacy Manager to develop and execute regional advocacy strategies and organizing plans for assigned constituencies and capacity programs (including Raiz, PPGen/college organizing, and patient advocacy organizing) across urban, rural, and campus communities.
- Build and maintain grassroots support networks that advance advocacy priorities and meet established engagement and program metrics.
- Lead volunteer recruitment, training, mobilization, and leadership development efforts for volunteers, interns, fellows, patient advocates, and storytellers.
- Lead and facilitate grassroots advocacy activities, events, and campaigns aligned with organizational priorities.
- Facilitate relationship-building and engagement efforts with allied organizations, community partners, and constituency groups.
- Represent the organization in coalitions, community events, task forces, committees, and partnership spaces as assigned.
- Facilitate advocacy and legislative engagement efforts in support of organizational priorities.
SUPPORTER ENGAGEMENT
- Support the development and implementation of digital organizing and supporter engagement strategies, including email outreach, action alerts, social media engagement, and online advocacy campaigns.
- Draft, edit, and coordinate supporter communications, including email updates, volunteer engagement content, recruitment messaging, and advocacy-related digital content.
- Provide onsite and in-person support for advocacy, organizing, and engagement activities as needed.
ELECTORAL & VOTER ENGAGEMENT
- Support and execute electoral and voter engagement activities under the direction of Public Affairs leadership, including:
- Utilizing VAN to identify and prioritize voter outreach efforts.
- Recruiting, coordinating, and mobilizing volunteers for direct voter contact activities such as phone banking, canvassing, and digital outreach.
- Coordinating with coalition partners, vendors, and community stakeholders.
- Supporting candidate endorsement processes and coalition engagement efforts.
- Representing the organization in coalition and electoral spaces as assigned.
DATA, REPORTING, & OPERATIONS
- Maintain accurate supporter, volunteer, and advocacy data using VAN and other internal systems.
- Track and report on departmental goals, key performance indicators, volunteer engagement, and strategic plan outcomes through dashboards and regular reporting processes.
- Support data collection, reporting accuracy, and operational coordination for Public Affairs and advocacy activities.
