The Director of Enterprise Applications & Solutions plays a pivotal role in our university's success by managing all aspects of the Ellucian Banner and related Enterprise Resource Planning applications. This vital role ensures that our technology services, including installation, configuration, programming, hosting, and troubleshooting, run seamlessly to support the university's operations. The Director leads a talented team of programmers, business systems experts, and intelligence analysts, providing technical leadership and guidance in enhancing existing systems, developing new applications, and integrating innovative solutions. Beyond managing technology, the Director is deeply committed to serving the university community, offering expert support to staff and faculty, and ensuring our systems meet the evolving needs of the WSSU family.

Key Responsibilities of the Director of Enterprise Applications & Solutions include:

  • Provides strategic and operational leadership for the university's enterprise applications and digital solutions ecosystem, including Banner ERP and ancillary systems, enterprise and departmental applications, Canvas and educational technologies, Microsoft 365 services, institutional reporting and analytics platforms, public website and web applications, enterprise integrations, and related digital services.
  • Oversees application administration, development, enhancement, integration, maintenance, security, testing, and operational support for enterprise systems that support academic, administrative, student success, financial, research, and compliance operations.
  • Leads enterprise application modernization initiatives, systems integrations, digital transformation efforts, and process improvement initiatives designed to improve operational effectiveness and the user experience across university platforms.
  • Provides oversight for reporting, analytics, and business intelligence solutions that support institutional planning, operational reporting, compliance obligations, and data-informed decision-making.
  • Responsible for the successful delivery of new or modified enterprise applications, integrated systems, reporting solutions, web applications, and educational technologies.
  • Ensures enterprise systems and digital platforms remain reliable, secure, scalable, accessible, and aligned with institutional priorities and operational continuity requirements.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the University of North Carolina System Office (UNCSO), technology vendors, campus stakeholders, and external partners to support enterprise technologies, shared services, integrations, and hosted solutions.
  • Serves as the primary relationship manager for major enterprise application vendors and technology partners, including ERP, reporting, educational technology, cloud services, and web application providers.
  • Collaborates with OIT leadership and campus departments to align enterprise application strategy, customer support, infrastructure services, cybersecurity requirements, and institutional priorities.
  • Oversees enterprise application governance, operational planning, resource allocation, service delivery expectations, and project prioritization across the application portfolio.
  • Establishes and monitors service expectations, operational metrics, and service level agreements for enterprise applications and digital services.
  • Provides technical and managerial oversight for day-to-day enterprise application operations, ensuring continuity of operations, operational reliability, maintenance planning, upgrade coordination, compliance reporting support, and continuous service improvement.
  • Provides leadership and oversight for personnel, organizational planning, staff development, succession planning, and performance management activities within the Enterprise Applications & Solutions directorate.
  • Recommends organizational structure, staffing strategies, operational priorities, and resource planning to ensure effective and sustainable delivery of enterprise technology services.
  • Supports recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, professional development, and retention of technical staff.
  • Participates in institutional governance committees, strategic planning initiatives, technology advisory groups, and university collaborations related to enterprise systems and digital services.
  • Represents the university through participation in UNC System initiatives, professional organizations, conferences, and higher education technology communities.
  • Promotes innovation, customer service excellence, collaboration, process improvement, and adoption of best practices in enterprise applications and digital services management.
  • Works collaboratively with the Deputy CIO & Chief Information Security Officer to ensure enterprise applications and digital platforms align with university cybersecurity, compliance, accessibility, privacy, and data governance standards.

Department Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum eight years of progressively responsible experience supporting enterprise applications, systems, services, or technologies
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible management and leadership experience overseeing technical teams within a complex organizational environment
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring technical staff, developing emerging leaders, building operational maturity, establishing operational standards, and fostering a collaborative and customer-focused team environment.
  • Significant experience supporting and managing ERP systems, integrations, reporting platforms, web applications, educational technologies, Microsoft 365 services, SaaS/cloud technologies, digital service environments, digital transformation initiatives, enterprise modernization projects, vendor relationships, and cross-functional technology operations.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of application integration methodologies, web technologies, service management principles, digital service delivery, and current trends in higher education technology.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, accessibility, compliance, privacy, and data governance principles

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Advanced degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration, Higher Education Administration, or related field

  • ITIL Foundation Certification
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
  • Strong Oracle technical background with SQL and PL/SQL experience
  • Significant technical knowledge of process design, service management, application lifecycle management, systems integration, and enterprise architecture principles.
  • Significant technical knowledge of and experience with HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, APIs, and web application technologies. Knowledge of C, Java, JQuery, Groovy, or related technologies
  • Knowledge of software testing, release management, upgrade planning, and change management processes involving complex enterprise environments and competing operational priorities.
  • Experience developing strategic technology plans, operational roadmaps, annual objectives, and enterprise project priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic guidance and consultation related to enterprise applications, digital services, business process improvement, and technology solutions.
