General Description:

The Outpatient Pharmacist I is an entrylevel pharmacist who provides safe, accurate, and patientcentered dispensing and clinical support in outpatient, retail, and/or specialty pharmacy settings. This role ensures regulatory compliance, delivers highquality medication counseling, supports medication access and operational workflow, and contributes to positive patient outcomes. The Outpatient Pharmacist I collaborates with providers, technicians, payors, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize safe medication use, adherence, and patient satisfaction.

Essential Responsibilities:

Shared Responsibilities:

  • Dispense medications safely, accurately, and in accordance with federal, state, and organizational regulations.

  • Compound, prepare, and verify medications using appropriate professional judgment, safety standards, and compounding guidelines.

  • Counsel patients on medication use, side effects, administration, storage, and adherence strategies to improve therapeutic outcomes.

  • Serve as a clinical resource for healthcare providers regarding medication availability, therapeutic alternatives, contraindications, and safe medication use.

  • Ensure appropriate storage, handling, and preservation of temperaturesensitive medications, including biologics and vaccines.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and billing integrity to ensure compliance with regulatory, audit, and financial standards.

  • Mentor and coach pharmacy technicians, interns, and students, supporting skill development and workflow efficiency.

  • Support medicationsafety initiatives, regulatory readiness, and qualityimprovement activities within the outpatient pharmacy setting.

  • Promote an efficient, patientcentered workflow, identifying opportunities to improve operations, patient satisfaction, and service quality.

  • Serve as PharmacistinCharge (PIC) when assigned, ensuring operational continuity and regulatory compliance.

Retail Pharmacist:

  • Manage daytoday prescription processing workflows, including dropoff, data entry, filling, verification, and patient pickup.

  • Resolve insurance claim issues, including rejections, prior authorizations, formulary challenges, and cost barriers.

  • Support pointofsale processes, addressing copay inquiries, billing discrepancies, and customer service concerns.

  • Oversee retail inventory management, including ordering, stock rotation, dating checks, and shortage mitigation.

  • Provide OTC (overthecounter) product guidance and symptombased recommendations within scope of practice.

  • Support immunization workflows (when applicable), including screening, administration (if credentialed), documentation, and registry reporting.

  • Lead technician workflow assignments in the retail environment to support efficiency and accuracy.

  • Promote adherence initiatives such as refill reminders, synchronization programs, and targeted interventions.

  • Engage directly with patients to enhance service satisfaction, problem resolution, and overall customer experience.

  • Ensure compliance with laws governing pseudoephedrine sales, immunizations, and other retailspecific regulatory requirements.

Specialty Pharmacist:

  • Dispense specialty medications requiring special handling, additional monitoring, or complex patient education.

  • Provide indepth initial and followup assessments (reassessments) for specialty medications, including adherence, side effects, and therapy response.

  • Monitor patient progress and resolve drugrelated problems related to specialty therapies, including interactions and appropriateness of therapy.

  • Support patients in accessing highcost specialty medications through coordination of copay programs, foundations, manufacturer assistance, and financialsupport pathways.

  • Coordinate medication delivery requiring special handling, including coldchain management and patientspecific logistics.

  • Collaborate with specialty providers, case managers, and payors to ensure continuity of care and optimal clinical outcomes.

  • Support specialty pharmacy accreditation (e.g., URAC, ACHC, TJC) through documentation, data collection, and adherence tracking.

  • Provide clinical support for hightouch medications, including biologics, injectables, gene therapies, and ongoing patient outreach.

Minimum Qualifications (Level 1):

Education: Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (D.Ph.) degree required.

Experience: No experience required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Licensure as a Pharmacist by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy required. Applicants without an active Oklahoma Pharmacist License must obtain licensure within 90 days of hire. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Immunization Administration Certificate required within 90 days of hire. Preceptor certification through the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy required within 18 months of hire.

Minimum Qualifications (Level 2):

Education: Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (D.Ph.) degree required.

Experience: 3+ Years experience

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Licensure as a Pharmacist by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy required. Applicants without an active Oklahoma Pharmacist License must obtain licensure within 90 days of hire. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Immunization Administration Certificate required within 90 days of hire. Preceptor certification through the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy required within 18 months of hire.

Minimum Qualifications (Level 3):

Education: Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (D.Ph.) degree required.

Experience: 5+ Years experience

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Licensure as a Pharmacist by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy required. Applicants without an active Oklahoma Pharmacist License must obtain licensure within 90 days of hire. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Immunization Administration Certificate required within 90 days of hire. Preceptor certification through the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy required within 18 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Foundational knowledge of outpatient, retail, and/or specialty pharmacy practice.

  • Strong communication, empathy, and customerservice skills when engaging with patients and care teams.

  • Proficiency in pharmacy dispensing systems, EMRs, technology platforms, and billing systems.

  • Ability to mentor and support pharmacy technicians and interns.

  • Basic understanding of specialty pharmacy workflows, access barriers, and patientsupport programs (if applicable).

  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to medication safety.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in fastpaced outpatient pharmacy environments.
