Job Summary The Department Manager is responsible for overseeing and directing the daily operations of an assigned team to ensure efficient execution of projects and alignment with organizational objectives. This leadership role includes responsibility for staff supervision, project and financial performance, resource planning, customer coordination, and continuous operational improvement. The Department Manager provides strategic oversight of multiple projects and leaders, maintains accountability for departmental performance, and ensures projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with quality and safety standards. This role requires strong leadership, financial oversight, and the ability to manage complex project environments while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence. Job Responsibilities
Recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, promoting, disciplining, and when necessary discharging department staff in accordance with established policies.
Providing leadership, guidance, and mentoring to support team development and achievement of departmental goals.
Overseeing multiple projects and ensuring effective coordination between Project Managers, field teams, and leadership.
Managing workload distribution, Client forecasting, and resource allocation to maintain operational efficiency.
Monitoring project schedules and milestones to ensure timely completion and effective delivery.
Reviewing financial performance across projects and maintaining accountability for departmental profitability and cost control.
Conducting forecasting and Client alignment meetings to ensure proper staffing and operational readiness.
Protecting project margins through oversight of cost controls, change order strategies, and recovery planning when needed.
Escalating and mitigating project risks related to schedule, funding, or operational constraints.
Serving as the primary liaison for customer representatives, clients, and executive stakeholders.
Participating in or facilitating the bid process and supporting project planning activities.
Overseeing project quality, safety performance, and compliance with applicable standards.
Managing scopes of work including structured cabling, network infrastructure, audio visual systems, security, life safety systems, estimating, or building information modeling activities when applicable.
Managing staffing plans and coordinating with recruiting resources to support workforce needs.
Reviewing safety, quality, and performance metrics to support continuous improvement.
Leading departmental culture by reinforcing performance expectations, accountability, and professional standards.
Developing and implementing process improvements to enhance departmental performance and operational consistency.
Performing additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Demonstrating strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
Communicating effectively in both written and verbal formats across teams and leadership levels.
Interpreting blueprints, project documentation, specifications, and reporting requirements.
Traveling within the assigned territory as required.
Learning and utilizing project management systems used by the organization and its clients.
Securing and maintaining a company-sponsored credit card.
Maintaining reliable and consistent attendance.
Meeting applicable driving standards.
Applying strong forecasting, budgeting, and financial analysis capabilities.
Identifying project risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
Managing multiple complex projects and large teams simultaneously.
Education
High school diploma or GED required.
Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, business, or a related field preferred.
Work Experience
Eight to twelve years of leadership experience in construction, telecommunications, data center infrastructure, or a related technical field.
Experience overseeing multiple projects simultaneously and managing large-scale project portfolios.
Demonstrated financial ownership of large project portfolios with responsibility for profitability and cost control.
Experience leading and supervising large operational teams including Project Managers, field supervisors, and technical staff.
Proven ability to recover or stabilize at-risk projects through effective planning and leadership.
Experience mentoring and developing mid-level leaders.
Experience interfacing directly with clients and executive stakeholders.
Proficiency with project scheduling and management tools including Primavera P6 or equivalent scheduling software.
Experience with Microsoft Project and Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Project.
Experience with project management platforms such as Procore, Bluebeam, or similar systems.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel including forecasting and financial modeling.
Familiarity with PowerBI or other data visualization tools preferred.
Knowledge of fiber network infrastructure, ISP or OSP environments, and related connectivity systems.
Ability to interpret OTDR testing results and familiarity with fiber cleaning practices preferred.
Fiber splicing experience strongly preferred.
