Position Overview

The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) is responsible for providing comprehensive healthcare services in a correctional healthcare environment. This role includes assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients; executing physician orders; administering medications; interpreting diagnostic tests; and developing patient care plans within the scope of licensure. The ARNP collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, facility personnel, and external healthcare providers to ensure the delivery of quality patient care while maintaining compliance with applicable healthcare regulations, policies, and accreditation standards. The position requires strong clinical judgment, effective communication skills, and the ability to remain calm and responsive in high-stress and emergency situations.

Job Responsibilities




  • Provide comprehensive nursing care, including executing physician orders, administering medications, performing examinations, and delivering treatments and procedures.



  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to assess patient conditions and healthcare needs.



  • Document physical findings, formulate prognoses, and collaborate with healthcare professionals to develop patient care plans.



  • Recommend medications and treatment plans within the scope of licensure.



  • Monitor inpatient hospitalizations and coordinate timely patient releases when appropriate.



  • Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of medical equipment and work areas.



  • Assist in monitoring the delivery of required healthcare services and contractual obligations.



  • Maintain effective working relationships with facility staff, healthcare personnel, and external providers.



  • Utilize established policies, procedures, and sound clinical judgment in performing job duties.



  • Evaluate healthcare services to prevent duplication or inappropriate utilization of services.



  • Maintain confidentiality and security of all medical records and ensure proper documentation of services provided.



  • Monitor patients with serious or potentially catastrophic illnesses and ensure appropriate interventions are completed.



  • Recommend methods to improve operational efficiency and cost effectiveness of healthcare services.



  • Audit pharmacy usage for formulary compliance and adherence to applicable pharmacy regulations.



  • Observe and document patient behavior and health conditions.



  • Provide individual and group health education and counseling as required.



  • Interpret and apply medical, legal, and regulatory documents, policies, and procedures.



  • Assist with legal processes, including reviewing medical records and attending hearings when necessary.



  • Communicate effectively with staff, patients, visitors, and the public using professionalism, tact, and sound judgment.



  • Attend staff and multidisciplinary meetings to support communication and quality improvement initiatives.



  • Support accreditation activities and compliance with healthcare standards and regulations.



  • Prepare safety and incident reports and respond appropriately to emergencies and unusual incidents.



  • Perform emergency response and rescue functions, including administering basic emergency medical care.



  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships in a challenging and secure environment.



  • Take appropriate action to prevent or de-escalate disruptive situations.



  • Accurately document and chart medical care provided.



  • Analyze information, establish facts, and make sound clinical decisions.



  • Remain alert and respond effectively in emergency and high-stress situations.




Job Requirements




  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a degree as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.



  • Current and active Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner licensure and/or certification in the state of employment.



  • Training in family practice required.



  • Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience required.



  • Valid driver's license required.



  • Must be at least 18 years of age.



  • Strong knowledge of nursing practices, patient care standards, and healthcare regulations.



  • Ability to interpret medical, legal, and technical documents.



  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.



  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.



  • Ability to work rotating shifts and function effectively in a secure healthcare environment.



  • Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and high-pressure situations.



  • Basic mathematical and analytical skills required for healthcare calculations and reporting.
