SUMMARY
OPEN UNTIL FILLED -
The SSS Coach will assist with the overall implementation of the TR iO Student Support Services (SSS) project, meet regularly with assigned students, provide academic and career advice, assist students in overcoming barriers, and facilitate communications among faculty, students, and staff. The SSS Coach will deliver comprehensive advising and coordinate student development activities for students who are first-generation, have limited income, and/or a documented disability.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage a caseload of TRIO SSS participants to support student retention, graduation, and transfer success.
- Provide academic, career, financial aid, and transfer counseling to program participants.
- Assist in promoting, recruiting, and enrolling students into the TR iO SSS program.
- Monitor academic progress, implement activities, and provide accommodations to TR iO participants to promote student success and persistence.
- Assist in designing and implementing Student’s Individual Success Portfolio.
- Provide resources and support to students facing barriers that may impede their academic success
- Advise students about content and structure of academic programs including graduation and/or transfer requirements for a particular program of study.
- Guide students in researching transfer, career, and financial options.
- Assist TRIO SSS students with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and exploring scholarship opportunities.
- Administer interest, ability, personality, career, financial literacy, and learning style assessments and inventories.
- Arrange campus visits and cultural/social events.
- Facilitate academic, career, financial literacy, and other student workshops.
- Participate in College programs, activities, and committees that are designed to promote academic success.
- Provide career information to students on future job trends, type of training and education required for a specific job, where to obtain specific training and education, salary information, employment outlook, and working conditions.
- Provide information and answers to student questions about the transfer process to other two- or four-year institutions.
- Contribute to the Annual Performance Report (APR) presented to the Department of Education on student success, persistence, retention, and graduation goals.
- Participate in professional development and College activities such as registration, graduation, and open houses as needed.
- Perform in a professional manner that promotes collaboration, collegiality, and outstanding customer service for both internal and external clients.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from a nationally accredited institution in Counseling, Psychology, or a related field required.
- Training in retention strategies required.
- Training in working with disadvantaged populations required.
- Training in financial aid and assessment procedures required.
- Knowledge of admission and transfer procedures required.
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Counseling or a related field preferred.
- Knowledge of student and career development theories preferred.
- Adult education experience preferred.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience providing academic and career advising to disadvantaged students required.
- Experience with federal grant programs required.
- Experience with diverse student populations, student databases, data tracking, and in developing advising, tutoring, and mentoring programs required.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills required.
- Experience advising SSS eligible participants preferred.
- Background that includes overcoming barriers similar to those of participants preferred.
- Experience with government, nonprofit, or social service agencies preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Generally works in a traditional climate-controlled office environment and requires the ability to sit for extended periods.
- Some walking, standing, and bending, with the ability to lift and maneuver items weighing up to 15 pounds required.
- Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines.
- In addition to regular office hours, position may sometimes require overtime and/or evening hours.
