Job Summary

The Upward Bound Summer Institute (UBSI) is a six-week residential experience hosted at UMass Amherst for 40 - 60 high school students. The UBSI Residential Supervisor supervises staff and students, oversees the implementation and evaluation of programming, and coordinates with Upward Bound Program staff during the intensive six-week program. This is a grant-funded position supervised by the Upward Bound Program Director.

Essential Functions

Participate in a one-week mandatory staff orientation and training during the weeks prior to the start date of the program.

Administer and operate the six-week Summer Institute with a four-week residential program for 40-60 Upward Bound Scholars (high school students).

Supervise one (1) Assistant Residential Supervisor and 2-3 AmeriCorps Tutor/Mentors; includes preparing and managing work schedules.

Coordinate all Upward Bound Scholar activities with Director and Assistant Director.

Live on campus and provide on-site supervision to Upward Bound Scholars during duty shift Sunday through Friday.

Create and maintain a positive, productive, safe and harmonious living environment for students and staff throughout an intensive six-week summer institute.

Plan and supervise day and night duty as assigned by the Program Director and Assistant Director.

Plan and coordinate cross-curricular and recreational programming.

Attend dinner/meals while monitoring and participating as needed.

Assist in chaperoning all field trips and cultural and recreational activities, as needed.

Attend staff development activities, weekly staff meetings, and student assemblies.

Prepare and submit written evaluations of staff, students, and summer program.

Other Functions

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated commitment to the educational philosophy of Upward Bound/TRIO programs.

Dynamic leadership skills and success as an academic and/or community leader.

Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Organized and attention to detail.

Professional attitude.

Experience managing staff and building a positive, team-oriented environment.

Knowledge of factors affecting student access and success in higher education, including those affecting marginalized students, students from diverse backgrounds, and students with disabilities.

Experience engaging with urban high-school-aged youth.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing residential educational experiences for high school students.

Experience in an Upward Bound/TRIO program or similar academic or residential program as participant or staff.

Knowledge of theories of positive behavioral support, student development, and culturally affirming and sustaining practices.

Knowledge of and experience in using positive approaches to behavioral management with high school age students preferred.

Additional Details

CPR training (2-year certification).

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed in an indoor university environment and involves lifting and transporting materials or equipment and general physical activity, including prolonged standing, walking, or assuming low postures.

Mon-Thurs, 4 PM-1 AM

Salary Information

Hourly Rate:$17.00
