The agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of an effective educational program in Family and Consumer Sciences ( FCS), including the areas of foods, nutrition, and health.

Essential responsibilities for the position include planning, marketing, conducting and evaluating educational programs in Family and Consumer Sciences ( FCS) for Nash County .
Emphasis of the Family and Consumer Sciences program is on nutrition, food safety, health and wellness, local foods and cooking, food preservation, chronic disease reduction, family financial management, and volunteer management. The position will conduct viable, proactive research-based educational programs in these areas for both adult and youth audiences. The position will collaborate with Extension agents in the region on common educational program initiatives. All agents are expected to have a youth component in their programming.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Nash County is a thriving community located just east of Raleigh and sits at the intersection of I-95 and I-87. The county seat and the Extension office are located in Nashville. As of the 2020 census, the population was 94,970. As of 2023, the biggest sectors in Nash County's economy were manufacturing, healthcare, social services, retail, food and accommodation services and education. Nash County comprises 11 municipalities, all varying in size. Rocky Mount is the largest city in the county with over 55,000 residents and a bustling economy.
The Nash County Cooperative Extension office is located at the Nash County Agriculture Center and is home to the Nash County Arboretum. Nash County Arboretum is made up of 11 garden areas and has been creatively designed, planted and maintained by NC State Extension Master Gardener volunteers.
Nash County Public Schools is the public education system serving the students of Nash County, North Carolina, with a commitment to academic achievement and student well-being.
Nash County has a long history of agriculture and is known as a leading agricultural county in the state. Nash has 133,252 acres of land in farms with 375 farms with the average farm size being 355 acres. Today, Nash County's top agricultural products are poultry, eggs, tobacco, and sweet potatoes.
Nash has seen huge investment in its infrastructure and facilities over the last couple of decades. As a result, its agricultural community is seeing growth in outdoor recreation, breweries, tournament sports and is becoming a hub for the arts and culture. Local attractions include children's museums, planetarium, historic sites, unique shopping experiences and an array of recreational activities.

Duties and Responsibilities
The agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of an effective educational program in Family and Consumer Sciences ( FCS), including the areas of foods, nutrition, family financial management, and health for Nash County.
The agent will collaborate and network with other agencies, groups, and organizations with similar missions. The professional in this position must be self-motivated, energetic, enjoy working with individuals as well as groups, be able to work with broad audiences, and have the ability to manage multiple tasks with little supervision. The successful candidate is expected to be a team player collaborating with the Nash Extension staff and other organizations on multidisciplinary programs with large impacts. The agent will possess a high degree of subject matter competence and be eager to learn more as new trends and issues emerge. The successful candidate will have good communication and organization skills, be able to work independently and be flexible to the demands of the public.
The agent will promote volunteer programs, such as the Extension Master Foods Volunteer Program to gain community support, develop and implement strategies to recruit new volunteers, conduct ongoing evaluation of the programs and services delivered by volunteers and implement improvements as necessary. The agent will review policies and procedures to reflect the overall values of the organization, provide educational opportunities, mentor volunteers, and complete other volunteer management duties.
There is interest in food safety information from both home audiences and the restaurant trade. The ability of clients to obtain training in an approved food safety certification program is expected.
The pursuit of outside resources such as grants and donations will be necessary to support program expansion.
Experience preparing and presenting educational resource materials for face-to-face settings or via other forms of writing, and internet, including social media, is important.

-Reporting on program impacts, including gathering data and preparing reports for stakeholders.

Minimum Experience/Education
One of the following educational requirements: - A Bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field (based on a 4.0 scale). The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor's degree. - A Bachelor's degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master's degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field, or - Completion of a Master's degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field.

A Bachelor's degree in family and consumer sciences, nutrition or related science is required.

Computer literacy including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is expected.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Candidates should have excellent time and resource management skills, should be personable, and able to build networking coalitions. Food safety certification (ServSafe or Safe Plates) is also highly desirable.
