Department Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences, one of five departments in the College of Science, has over 50 faculty, 150 graduate and 3,000undergraduate students. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to research and teaching in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, and Organismal-environment interactions. We offer Bachelor's degrees in Biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Medical Laboratory Science, and Forensic Science, and Masters and PhDs in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science. We measure our success by the success of our students and the quality of our intellectual contributions to society.

Position Overview

Prepare the introductory biology instructional labs (BIOL 1760/1761, others as needed) for use by students; create and maintain inventories of chemicals, models, supplies and materials for assigned labs; assist Instructional Lab Supervisor(s) as needed; as warranted, work with other Scientific Lab Technicians and supervise student workers.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and one year of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General understanding of the field of science or engineering related to position. Knowledge of special equipment used in teaching laboratories and/or test instruments, repair equipment, tools and parts in use in the field. Ability to teach and/or supervise others through demonstration and verbal communication. Knowledge of scientific techniques, methods and procedures. Ability to locate and replace defective parts and troubleshoot technical equipment. Ability to prepare accurate assays/samples or perform arithmetical computations and maintain detailed records.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences and two years of experience in instructional laboratory preparation.

Job Duties



  • A. Performs weekly lab prep in advance of the first lab meeting. B. Remediates introductory instructional labs throughout the week. C. Maintains instructional labs and living specimens. D. Maintains inventory
  • Works with lab supervisors to align goals, objectives and expectations. Assists Lab Supervisor with planning of laboratory experiments.
  • Organizes and maintains prep area and materials and maintains live organisms/specimens, cultures, reagents and/or other sensitive course related materials.
  • Maintains safe environment and inspects laboratory rooms for safety, security, hazardous waste, and broken equipment. Contacts departmental personnel, custodial staff, building representative, facilities and/or Risk Management as needed.
  • Participates in various training opportunities.
  • Serve in Administrative Committees. Training and working with Student Workers/Co-Workers.


Physical Requirements

Communicating with others to exchange information.
Lifting and Moving objects up to 50 pounds.
Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.

No adverse environmental conditions expected.
