Supervisory Responsibilities: Mortgage Underwriters

Summary: Effectively lead Underwriting team, towards accuracy, regulatory compliance, and Investor compliance with focus on team skills development and internal customer service

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage Underwriting associates to ensure mortgage applications are analyzed in compliance with bank, investor and regulatory requirements
  • Coach, train and guide underwriters with focus on development of expertise in underwriting practices, program guidelines, and service standards.
  • Oversee day-to-day activities of Underwriting associates including scheduling, recruitment, onboarding ,offboarding, disciplinary actions, performance evaluations, and salary recommendations.
  • Keep self and direct reports current on bank, investor and regulatory requirements
  • Analyze Quality Control results to identify error trends and determine areas where additional staff training is needed.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain underwriting guidelines, job aids and procedures, monitor market trends and identify areas for process improvement to enhance efficiency and service quality.
  • Ensure the Bank's interests are consistently safeguarded by identifying and escalating potential risks, liabilities, losses, or conflicts.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other members of the Mortgage Department to resolve application issues and provide feedback on underwriting decisions.
  • Communicate and provide feedback to the Processing Supervisor of processing errors or missing documentation.
  • Pursue professional development through Workday courses and internal and external training to support career growth.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of mortgage products, underwriting procedures, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance.
  • Analytical and decision-making skills: Ability to evaluate complex financial information
  • Leadership and team management experience: Effective coaching, mentoring, and performance management of Underwriting staff.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple applications, follow up on pending items and maintain accurate records.
  • Discretion in Handling of sensitive financial information confidentially and ethically.
  • Able to perform effectively with minimal supervision and independently, while also collaborating within a team environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, or related field
  • A minimum of 10 years' underwriting experience required
  • DE,SAR, and FHA certification preferable
