THE POSITION

Bring your warehouse operations and material handling knowledge to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC)! We are looking for an experienced Service Occupations Teacher to join our staff of vocational teachers. State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Phoenix is one of many facilities in DOC that offer a variety of vocational programs to teach inmates valuable skills to use upon their re-entry into their communities. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will provide vocational instruction in warehouse operations and material handling to inmate students. Your work will involve evaluating and determining inmates' potential for placement within the program's curriculum. You will adapt curriculum materials to meet the needs of students, select or develop a variety of teaching techniques, and write individualized lesson plans. As a teacher, you will provide classroom and shop instruction. Some of your duties will include assigning homework, administering tests and quizzes, and providing final evaluations. Additionally, you will monitor inmate behavior, establish classroom rules, inventory tools, and discipline disruptive students.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:45 AM to 3:45 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $67,581.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Education equivalent to high school graduation and two years wage earning experience beyond the completed apprenticeship period in the specified parenthetical; or
  • If there is no approved apprenticeship period for the specified parenthetical, education equivalent to high school graduation and three years of wage earning experience in the specified parenthetical.
  • Please Note: The specified parenthetical for this posting is Warehouse Operations/Materiel Handling. There is no approved apprenticeship period for this parenthetical.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of or eligibility for a current Pennsylvania Department of Education Vocational Certificate 1 or 2 for the specified parenthetical; or
  • Possession of or eligibility for a current Pennsylvania Department of Education Vocational Intern Certificate for the specified parenthetical; or
  • Eligibility for a Pennsylvania Department of Education Emergency Certificate for the specified parenthetical.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
